James Fullen Litton

James Fullen Litton, age 63 died this morning at his farm in the corner
settlement, from an old war wound from the late conflict.

When his father passed away in 1853 the John Whitley Litton Plantation was
divided between the heirs and sold.

James F. Litton first married Lucinda Redwine, daughter of Josiah Redwine of
Elk Garden. Lucinda passed away in 1842. James then married a first cousin
from Kentucky, Margaret Eunice Litton, daughter of Soloman Litton Jr. and
Judith Anna Shoemaker of the corner settlement.

In 1853 he moved to land in the corner inherited by his wife from Soloman
Litton Sr., an original settler and long hunter in this country. They made a
large cattle farm on this land, known as Soloman Litton Hollow.

Mr. Litton was educated in Roanoke and became a farm manager at an early
age. His father, John W. Litton Sr., was the eldest child of Captain Soloman
Litton Sr. of the Local Militia 1770-1790, an original settler in this
Country.

At age four, John W. was captured at Ruddles Station in Kentucky County
Virginia, along with two of his brothers and parents (Captain Litton was
serving there) by Shawnee Indians and held in the camps near Fort Detroit
for three years.

After their release by treaty (1784), Captain Litton claimed bounty land in
southern Kentucky (now a state) and raised his family at that place, now
called Knox County.

John Litton returned to Russell County in 1800, to purchase the Litton Hill
Plantation (which had its own post office) in Elk Garden. James F. Litton
grew up at Litton Hill and became an overseer of slaves and farm manager.

Mr. Litton was preceded in death by first wife, Lucinda Redwine, Father John
Litton Sr., Mother Sarah Fullen Litton, Two brothers, Soloman Litton 2nd,
Caney Franklin Litton, One sister, Sarah Snider. Mr. Litton is survived by
2nd wife, Margaret (Peggy) Litton, Four sons and three daughters. John
Jackson Litton, Cleveland, Va., Zachary Taylor Litton Sr., Lebanon, Va.,
Soloman Scott Litton, of the home. Eunice Litton (Mrs. James H. Gilbert) of
the corner, Josephine Catherine Litton (Mrs. Charles H. Monk, Sr. known as
Josie Monk) Rebecca Jane Litton (Mrs. Lafayette M. Monk, Sr. known as Beccy
Monk) ten grandchildren.

A wake will be conducted by Father Seane Jones, at the home. Interment will
by in Litton Cemetery at Litton Hill-Elk Garden. Fr. Jones will conduct last
rites at graveside. All relatives and friends are urged to attend and hear
Mr. Littons letter of life, read as urology.

"Mountain Echo" - Laurel County, Kentucky - 1886

August 13, --Died: At her residence 3 1/2 miles south of London on Tuesday
the 10th inst., Mrs. Cynthia Litton in her 85th year, wife of Hiram Litton
whose death preceded hers in 1852. Sister Litton was converted to Christ
about 65 yeas ago under the preaching of James Barnes, father of the noted
Geo. O. Barnes. She was a daughter of Jeremiah Smith one of the oldest
settlers of this part of Kentucky. Her remains were interred at Old Union
Church on the 11th.

"Lebanon News" - Virginia - Nov 19 1889

ZACHARY TAYLOR LITTON Sr. departed this life November 16, he was 37 years of
age. Mr. Litton, locally known as Taylor Litton, was killed in a hunting
accident on his farm in the corner section at Soloman's Hollow.

Taylor was huntin with his nephew, Douglas Litton, age 11, on horseback near
the Pinnacle, when a large grizzly bear they had wounded earlier attacked
from ambush, Taylor was knocked from his horse and without his 50 caliber
Kentucky rifle, was forced to fight the beast with a hunting knife. Douglas
rode off fast to get help from his father, Soloman Litton, at the farm. When
Soloman arrived at the scene he found Taylor's head partly eaten away.

Taylor Litton was an experienced hunter and served as a guide for out-of-
County-Hunters. He was an excellent horseman and outdoorsman.

Mr. Litton was born in Elk Garden on his grandfather John W. Litton's
Plantation and attended school in Lebanon. Mr. Litton also owned a country
home in the Spring City Area at Cooper Ridge. He operated a saw mill there
and was known to have harvested the largest black walnut tree ever cut in
the Clinch Mountains. It measured 19 feet in diameter.

As a young man he made cattle drives to Roanoke for his father and other
cattlemen of the County. These drives will end when the railroad is
completed.

Mr. Litton learned his horsemanship from an old slave called Samuel Right.
Sam was freed in 1862.

Mr. Litton was Russell County Constable from 1881 to 1887. He was County
Treasurer from 1881 until the present. Just prior to his death he had
announced his candidacy to run for County Supervisor.

Taylor Litton is survived by a wife, Rebecca Vermillion, daughter of Isaac
G. Vermillion, a former Justice of peace and Sheriff of Russell County, Four
sons and Three daughters; John T., Isaac G., Zachary T. Jr., Canie B., Fanny
Bell, Edna O., Maud A., all of the home. Three brothers and one sister; John
J., Soloman Scott, Vincent C., Eunice Malissa (Mrs. James Harvey Gilbert).
Two half sisters, Josephine Catherine Litton (Mrs. Charles H. Monk Sr.) and
Rebecca Jane Litton (Mrs. Lafayette H. Monk Sr.) all of the corner
settlement survived by his Mother Margaret (Peggy) Litton who is the
daughter of Soloman Litton Jr. and Judith Anne Shoemaker. Numerous nieces
and nephews. Taylor Litton was preceded in death by one brother, Aaron Lee
Litton and his late father, James Fullen litton, the late cattleman and
farmer, in 1881.

Pallbearers will be William Douglas Litton, John Thomas Litton, William
Taylor Litton, James Myles Litton, Aker E. Litton, Ollie Litton Taylor Monk,
Stewart Monk, Lafayette Monk Jr., Charles Monk Jr.

Mr. Litton will be interred at the scene of death and last rites delivered
by Father George Murphy of the Anglegian Church in Abingdon, Virginia.

Old Resident Passed Away

Pioneer Resident of the Township Dies at His Home Monday Morning

Mark Smith, one of the oldest residents of this place died Monday morning
after an illness dating back into February. He was born in Hancock, Ind.,
March 13, 1831.

The funeral took place Wednesday and was largely attended. The remains were
interred in Lambert cemetery.

In 1819 he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel White. Ten children were
born to them who are: Mrs. Ella Tilford, Salem; Mrs Emma Cheesum, Stockport;
Mrs. Josephine Garretson, Beaver, Nebraska, Mrs. Arminta Lawrence, Mt.
Pleasant; Mrs. Lucy Watkins of Lockridge; Mrs. Martha Litton of Glasgow;
Antha Smith of Glasgow; Frank Smith of Stockport and Charles and George
Smith of Lockridge.

Mr. Smith and family have resided near Lockridge for many years and a large
circle of friends will deeply sympathize with the surviving relatives.

"The Honaker Herald" - Russell County, Virginia - May 20 1937

Lytton, John Jackson, died at his home in Finney, near Honaker on May 19. He
was 90 years of age. Mr. Lytton was a life-time resident of Russell County,
a warden in the Anglican Catholic Church of Abingdon. He was a farmer and a
merchant in the Honaker area. He was the proprietor of Lyttons Cash Grocery
in Finney. Mr. Lytton was a descendant of Captain Soloman Litton Sr. an
early trapper and settler in the county. He was preceded in death by a wife
Sarah Ann Garrett, daughter of Marten Garrett and Elizabeth Taylor of the
Corner section. Also two brothers, Zachary Taylor Litton of Lebanon and
Aaron Litton of the Corner, sisters Jose C. Monk, Rebecca Monk Statzer and
Eunice Gilbert all of the Corner section. Survivors enclude two brothers
Soloman Scott Litton and Vince Crockett Litton also of the Corner section,
and ten children. Will Litton and Zack Litton of Coeburn. Va., Walter Litton
of Pound, Va., Charles Litton of the home, Arthur Litton of Tucson, Arizona,
Aker Litton, Miami Florida, James Myles Litton, of Bluefield, W. Va.,
Margaret Cook and Kate Cooledge of Cleveland, Va., and Minnie Turner of
Coeburn, Va. Many nephews and nieces. Arrangements made by Honaker Funeral
Home. Pall-bearers, Aker Litton, Zack Litton, Charles Litton, Will Litton,
Arthur Litton, William Garrett. Last rites by Fr. Emilo Cottral at the home,

Defeated "Uncle Bud" Ledbetter for Nomination; Re-elected in 1914

Partner Killed in Texas

Widely Known Muskogeean Came to City for Visit in 1902; Became Resident

Jno. S. Barger, 77, former Muskogee county sheriff and a resident of this
city for the past 36 years, died at 6:45 o'clock yesterday evening at his
home, 416 Okmulgee avenue. Barger had been in ill health for several months.

Barger was born in the state of Mississippi, in 1860, and moved with members
of his family to the state of Illinois in 1866, when he was 6 years old. Two
years later, the Barger family removed to Lexington, Tenn., where Barger
lived until he was a young man.

Came to City in 1902

Later, he moved to Hillsboro, Texas where he was employed in the cotton
buying business. In the spring of 1902, he came to Muskogee to visit his
mother and brother, both of whom lived here and who were ill. He liked the
town so well that he remained.

Barger was employed by the Spaulding Mercantile Co. as manager of its gin,
then located on the site of the old M. O. and G. railroad station, and later
was employed by the Patterson Mercantile Co. In 1914, he was elected sheriff
of Muskogee county, defeating the late J. F. "Uncle Bud" Ledbetter, pioneer
Oklahoma peace officer who died recently, in the democratic primary, and
defeating W. S. Harsha, the republican nominee in the general election by a
vote of 2336 to 2199.

In 1916, he was renominated for a second term, and in the general election
defeated a republican, F. J. Bays, by a vote of 3323 to 2165.

In 1918, Barger sought a third term as sheriff, but was defeated by Sheriff
Jim Robbins, who served two terms, retired and was succeded by Ledbetter.

Employed as Speed Officer

After his defeat for a third term as sheriff, Barger was employed by the
county commissioners as "speed officer" to curb the then-growing autombile
menace and was given a county patrol car to cruise country roads and highways
and force respect for traffic laws.

Since 1928, he had been employed as bailiff by Judge Enlo V. Vernor, who has
been on the county or district bench all of that time. It was in connection
with his duties as county speed officer that Barger lived through one of his
most harrowing experiences as a peace officer - that of watching while
desperadoes shot a fellow officer to death. Barger himself was chained to a
tree.

On May 19, 1924, the county's "speed patrol" car was stolen from the Koehler
garage by Dave and Bill Lawrence, young Muskogee desperadoes who lived with
their mother in Muskogee.

Bill Lawrence had just finished serving a sentence in the state penitentiary
at McAllister for robbery of a freight car at Ft. Gibson, and the pair was
wanted for auto theft in Durant, Okmulgee, Bristow, Ardmore, and Henryetta
and was suspected of several robberies in Muskogee.

Youths Caught in El Paso

After several unsuccessful attempts to catch them here, Sheriff Ledbetter
was notified on June 24, 1924, that the pair had been apprehended at El Paso,
Texas on the Mexican border, and sent Barger and Deputy sheriff Joe Morgan
after them.

Morgan and Barger left Muskogee on the Katy train on Friday the 13th.

After taking charge of the prisoners, Barger and Morgan started back with
them in the county's car. Barger was driving and Morgan was in the rear seat
with Dave and Bill Lawrence.

Barger said that he did not know how the boys got Morgan's gun, but he heard
a shot, looked around and found himself peering in the barrel of a revolver
held in Dave Lawrence's hand.

Morgan had slumped to the floor, shot through the head.

After shooting Morgan, the boys forced Barger to walk off the road into a
woods, handcuffed him to a tree and escaped again in the county's car.

Barger shouted until he attracted attention of a ranch worker, who refused
to aid him until officers arrived and rescued him. He then went to Ft.
Worth, where he organized a posse of Tarrant county officers and took up the
trail. Sheriff Ledbetter took several Muskogee county officers to Texas to
join the hunt, but the Lawrence boys later were seen near Council Hill, in
Muskogee County.

Sheriff Recalled Events

Barger returned to Muskogee the next day with Morgan's body.

Barger was handcuffed to the tree for three hours - from 7 a.m. until 10
o'clock. It was 11 o'clock when he reached Fort Worth.

He said the Lawrence boys taunted him, telling him they had informed him he
would never bring them back, rifled his pockets of money, tobacco and other
belongings, and then shackled him.

Sheriff Barger told this story:

"We left Sanderson, Texas Sunday afternoon where the two prisoners had been
given over to us by the officers of that place. The Lawrence boys were not
known to be hardboiled. Joe and I had known them since they were knee-high
to a duck. We never imagined for a minute there would be any trouble on that
long trip home. We were making the trip in the car the boys had stolen, and
in which they were headed for Mexico.

"I didn't realize what had happened when I heard the report of the pistol
until I har Bill Lawrence tell me to "Put 'em up." I put up my hands. Morgan
had slumped down in his seat. Blood was flowing from his head. He never
moved a muscle. He was dead. The car, going at a rate of at least 20 miles
an hour, crashed into a fence. It righted itself and mowed down fence posts
for 30 or 40 yards, then it stopped."

Lifts Body from Auto

"Bill Lawrence handed his gun to his brother. He forced me to help lift
Joe's body to the seat. A car sped by just as this thing was done. Fearing
my own life would be taken, I made no outcry. Babe Lawrence had the gun
pointed at me. He took my pistol from the front seat pocket of the car.
After he had shifted Morgan's body to the back seat, Bill Lawrence took the
wheel. I was forced to the back seat to watch Joe's body.

"The younger Lawrence boy climbed into the front seat with his brother and
held the gun on me. He got out after he had driven about a quarter of a
mile, and opened a gate to a ranch. Driving in, Bill Lawrence ran quickly to
a thicket. He had gone about 200 yards when he stopped. The boys forced me
to get out. They made me put my hands around a tree, and placed handcuffs on
my wrists. Then they unloaded Joe's body about eight feet from me, jumped
into the car, turned around and sped toward Fort Worth."

Bill Lawrence later was hanged in Arizona and Dave, "Babe" Lawrence is
serving a life term in Texas for Morgan's death. Barger and G. H. Hettick,
now a deputy county clerk, then civil deputy sheriff, were witnesses in
both trials.

Barger and Mayor J. E. Wyand, accused by a grand jury for alleged failure to
enforce liquor and gambling laws, were aquitted by a jury in 1917. They were
procecuted by the late S. P. Freeling, then attorney general.

Funeral services are incomplete, but will be announced later by Guipel
Funeral Home.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Laura M. Barger, five nephews, Dave, W.B.
Bruce of Muskogee, Lytton of Topeka, Kan., Ralph of Oak Park, Ill., and Ray
of Kansas City, MO., and five nieces, Mrs. Nina Ivy, Memphis, Mrs. Kate
Haggard, Mrs. W. B. Harris, Mrs. B. T. Jeurgens, and Mrs. W. H. Gott, all
of Muskogee.

Mrs. Walter V. Allen, Pioneer Granite Lady, Passes Away Friday
Funeral Services Held From Local Church Of Christ Monday

Mrs. Nancy Ann Litton Allen, wife of Walter V. Allen of Granite, passed away
Friday afternoon, August 13th at the family home following a short illness.
Mrs. Allen had been in poor health for several years, however was up Friday
morning and did her work about the home, and helped her husband with the
work in the Allen's store. She was born in Hickman County, Tennessee,
January 11, 1886, and was 62 years seven months and two days at the time of
her death.

Nancy Ann Litton was married to W. V. Allen in Hickman county, Tennessee on
January 8, 1905 and the family moved to Greer county, Oklahoma in 1906. They
have lived in and around Granite since that time. Mrs. Allen became a member
of the Church of Christ at an early age and was a faithful member until the
last few years, when falling health prevented her from taking an active part
in church work. She was a loving wife and mother, and was loved and
respected by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her passing five
daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. J. B. Perry, Granite; Mrs. Lawrence
Griffith, Mangum; Mrs. Luther French, Granite; Mrs. Leonard Pratt, Mangum;
Mrs. Haskell Bilbrey, Texhoma, and Lester Allen, Bakersfield, California.
Four brothers and two sisters also survive. They are: C.M. Litton, Granite;
Henry Litton, Granite; Brown Litton, South Gate, California; Haskell Litton,
Lancaster, California; Mrs. Robert Vaughan, South Gate, California and Mrs.
Clyde Newman, Bell, California. Ten grandchildren are also among the
survivors. All of the children and brothers and sisters were present for
the last rites. Two sisters and three brothers and the mother and father
precede Mrs. Allen in death.

Funeral rites were held at the local Church of Christ Monday afternoon at
2:30 o'clock, with Bro. Mark McElhaney, Church of Christ minister from
Oklahoma City, in charge. Interment was in the City Cemetery under the
direction of the Irwin Funeral Home of Granite. Pall bearers were: Elmer
Pickering, Hugh Vaughan, Arthur Bowman, Albert Sanders, J. C. Ford, Sr.,
and Tillman Terry. Out of town relatives here for the last rites were: Mr.
and Mrs. Tolbert Litton, Chickasha; Mr. and Mrs. James, Duncan; Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Mcgavock, Hobart; Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Pratt; Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith
and daughter, Mrs. Sam Allenbaugh, and Spence Allen, all of Oklahoma City,
and Mr. and Mrs. Walton French.

Lady Wentworth, Breeder of Arab Horses

Baroness Wentworth died in hospital at Crawley, Sussex, on Thursday night at
the age of 84. As a leading breeder of Arab horses and as a writer of books
on breeding, Lady Wentworth carried on the tradition of the Crabbet stud
which had been built up by her father and mother. In her independence of
mind, her eccentricities, her artistic pursuits, and her stormy domestic
relations she reflected her ancestry -- both her father, Wilfrid Scawen
Blunt, the traveller and poet, and her maternal great-grandfather, Lord
Byron.

Judith Anne Dorothea Blunt-Lytton, Baroness Wentworth, as sixteenth holder
of the peerage, was the only daughter of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt and Lady Anne
King-Noel, who as a child of the Earl of Lovelace was a granddaughter of
Lord Byron, the poet. In youth she was a society beauty and her appearance
made a strong impression on Burne-Jones, for some of whose last studies she
sat. "She gives me the impression," he said, "of perfect beauty combined
with the speed and lightness of foot of some wild creature."

In 1899 she married Neville Stephen Lytton, son of the second [actually
first] Earl of Lytton. The marriage took place in Cairo. The bride was given
away by Lord Cromer, the Resident, who to the Queen's inquiry about the
ceremony sent the laconic reply, "Marriage duly performed." She later became
estranged first from her father with whom she had differences of opinion
about the management of the Crabbet estates, and afterwards from her
husband, from whom she was divorced in 1923. Her mother succeeded to the
Barony of Wentworth a few months before her death in 1917, when it devolved
by special remainder on Judith Blunt-Lytton. The new Lady Wentworth lived
for the rest of her life at Crabbet Park in the grounds of which her father
was buried.

She inherited from her parents the love of the desert and of the horse of
the desert, the Arabian, and the "feeling for the desert" never left her.
After her mother's death she took over the Crabbet stud which the
unfortunate quarrels of her parents had allowed to reach a very low level,
and gradually built it up to the dominating position which undoubtedly it
holds to-day. There is hardly a stud in this country or abroad which does
not owe its existence to one or other of the Crabbet stock. As a breeder she
probably had few equals; she combined a voluminous knowledge of pedigree
with a keen eye for a horse and with the means to breed on a big scale, and
she had a certain flair or instinct which transcends scientific calculations.
She was also a competent horse trainer and brought the business of preparing
horses for the show ring to a fine art. The foundation of the modern Crabbet
stud was undoubtedly the almost legendary Skowronek, a pure bred Arab foaled
in Poland, whose sire was hanged in the market place by the revolutionaries
of 1917; he was saved from a like fate by being bought for Mr. Walter Winans
just before the First World War, after which Lady Wentworth acquired him.
From this foundation has flowed the long line of champion Arab sires and
mares which have dominated the show ring for many years in almost every
country of the world. A character as strong as Lady Wentworth's could hardly
keep out of controversy; indeed, like the Biblical warhorse which she loved
so much, she probably "smelled the battle from afar" and she was a doughty
opponent. Just after the war she became involved in a violent controversy
within the Arab Horse Society over the height and size of Arab horses in
England. After much acrimony she won her point that there should be no
limiting the size of the Arab horses in English shows.

At Crabbet she used also to breed dogs and her toy spaniels won innumerable
championships. In later years she gave an increasing share of her time to
her painting and her poetry. Among her books are two major works:
Thoroughbred Racing Stock and its Ancestors (1938), and The Authentic
Arabian Horse and His Descendants (1945).

She is survived by her son, the fourth Earl of Lytton, to whom the
[Wentworth] title descends, and by her two daughters.

"West Union Association of United Baptists Minutes" - 1960 pg 20

Stanley, Rube H. - born Sept. 10, 1884 departed this life April 16, 1960,
age 75. He was a faithful member of Pine Hill Baptist Church. He was united
in marriage to Bertha Litton and to his union were born 12 children two of
which preceded him in death, Lucille and Helen. Survivors: wife, Bertha,
five sons, Jessie, Archie and Bobby of Oneida, Tenn., Leland of Muncie,
Ind., and Chester of Cincinnati, Ohio. Five daughters, Mrs. Homer Ryan,
Grundy, Va., Mrs. Willard Duncan, Mrs. R. L. Stanley, Mrs. Reuben Byrd all
of Oneida, Tenn. Twenty-two grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One
brother, Mr. Andy Stanley of Oneida. Funeral services were conducted at
Pine Hill Baptist Church with Rev. A. V. Stanley and Rev. Jackson Chambers
officiating. Burial in Church Cemetery. We miss him very much, but realize
God has called him home to rest. Pine Hill Baptist Church.

Ross, James - was born Sept. 5, 1914, departed this life October 31, 1960,
age 46 years, 1 month and 26 days. He was married to Golda Angel Ross, Sept.

William M. Litton, 83, retired miner of Meally, died in a local hospital at
2:25 a.m. Sunday, May 3 1964, after suffering a stroke. He had been ill for
the past year. A son of the late James and Nancy Webb Litton, he was born at
Boons Camp February 14 1881, and had been a resident of Meally for the past
six years. He was a member of the Pentacostal Church. Survivors include his
wife, Mrs Georgie Gillispie Litton; seven sons, W.M. Litton, Iowa, Louisiana;
Willis, Howard and Donald Litton, all of Meally; Robert Litton, White House;
Ernest Litton, New Rigdon, Ohio; Leman Litton, Sandusky, Ohio; two step-sons,
Ernest and James R. Gillispie both of Meally; seven daughters, Pearl Bernice
Williams, Lillian Litton, and Phyllis Litton all of Meally; Dixie Bayes,
Marion, Ohio; Dolly Drake, Alberstan, Ohio; Gracie Fairchild, Barnetts
Creek; Maxie Boyd, Thealka; a stepdaughter, Loretta Webb, Wabash, Indiana;
two brothers, Richard Litton, Meally; Jake Litton, Louisa. Also surviving
are 37 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 5 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. today at the Pentecostal Church
of Christ in this city with Cline Salyers as officiating minister. Burial was
in the Sam Ratliff Cemetery at White House.

retiring in 1969. During World War II, he was a foreman at the former
Sterling Mills Inc. in Worcester. Mr. Pluta was a member of St. Andrew
Bobola Church, and a member and longtime financial secretary of the Polish
Cannoneers. The funeral will be held Wednesday from Sitkowski & Malboeuf
Funeral Home, 340 School St., Webster, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew
Bobola Church, 54 West Main St. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery,

Carl J. Litten, a retired railroad employee, died Tuesday (Oct. 26, 1993) in
Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a long illness. He was 87. Litten,

had lived in the Town of Niagara since 1948 and worked as a machinist for
the Niagara Junction Railroad for 23 years, retiring in 1971.

James D. Lutton, a professional actor and co-founder of the Tin Bin craft
store in Neffsville, died Monday at Moravian Manor, Lititz, after a long
illness. He was 64.

A resident of 1986 Park Plaza, he was the husband of Jo Ann Kunkel Lutton.
They were married 31 years last June.

In 1973 he and his wife established the Tin Bin, an 18th-century lighting
shop in Neffsville. They stocked the shop with a variety of lamps, lanterns
and candle sticks, as well as items made by nearly 400 craftsmen.

Previously, he worked for more than 20 years as associate editor of Standard
& Poors Corp., with offices at Science Press in Ephrata.

A professional actor, he held an actor's equity card and performed at Pocono
Playhouse, Hilltop Theater in York, and Mount Gretna Playhouse and on the
Borscht circuit in the Catskills.

He served as president of the Lancaster Little Theater from 1952 to 1953. He
wrote and produced a play, "The Happiness Maker," at the Fulton Opera House
in the 1960s. Lutton performed in local productions of the Lancaster Little
Theater and in Armstrong World Industries industrial shows.

He also starred at the Fulton in "The Tender Trap" and "Mary, Mary" and
performed in "Christmas Carol." In 1965, Lutton received best actor honors
from the Lancaster Theater Arts Association for his work in "The Tender
Trap."

He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. Born in Lancaster,
he was the son of the late Joseph Usher Barry Paget and Miriam Bair Lutton.

A lifelong resident of Lancaster, he attended Millersville University and
was active in its theater arts program. He was a 1950 graduate of McCaskey
High School.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Sally Jo, wife of Michael A.
Lehman of Maytown, and Susan Paget of Lancaster; one grandson; a sister,
Marian L. Dommel of Lancaster; and a brother, J. Barry of Lancaster.

Austin of Ransomville, Patricia Kaler of Houston and Kathleen Cianchetti.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. John de LaSalle Catholic

Mrs. Ollie Blevins Kidd, 101, of Trisler Lane, Junction City, died Tuesday,
April 22, 1997 at her residence.

Born March 2, 1896, in Wayne County, she was a daughter of the late Alfred
and Ellen Litton Blevins and the widow of Oscar Kidd.

She was a homemaker and a member of Junction City Baptist Church.

Survivors include: three daughters, Nola Flynn of Junction City, Linnie
Short of Stanford, and Cleora Westerfield of Danville; two sons, Alfred
Kidd of Harrodsburg and Billy Kidd of Bardstown; one brother, Garr Blevins
of Jamestown Tenn.; 37 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren; and 13 great
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five children, Robert,
Everett, Jesse, Chester and Letha Kidd.

Services for Mrs. Kidd were held Friday, April 25, at Preston-Pruitt Funeral
Home in Danville by Rev. Paul Bunger and Rev. Earl Burnside. Burial was in
Buffalo Springs Cemetery in Stanford.

Pallbearers were Rex, Mark, Mike, Tim, and Bobby Kidd, Roger Cannada,
Charlie Flynn, and Ronnie Short. Honorary pallbearers were Jim, David,

Born March 22, 1922, in Erie, Pa., he was the son of the late George and
Bertha Palmer.

He was employed as a representative for the Christian Record Braille
Foundation for 16 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the
U.S. Army. He was a member of Needmore Seventh-day Adventist Church, where
he served as an elder. He was a member of the National Society of Poets, and
Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Co. in Hagerstown, where he served as president
for 11 years.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline J. Kenerson Palmer, whom he married
Sept. 22, 1957; nine children, Maredith Torres of Glendale, Calif., Trisha
Poland of Calico Rock, Ark., Donna Horton of New Bern, N.C., Joyce Lytton of
Lilburn, Ga., Debbe Palmer of Sanbornton, N.H., Sandi Higgins of West Palm
Beach, Fla., Harry D. Palmer Jr. of Slidell, La., Karen Henry of Randolph,
N.J., and Lisa Greenawalt of Harrisburg, Pa.; one grandson, Jesse Palmer,
who is being raised in the Palmer home; one sister, Rita Titus of Erie, Pa.;
23 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Needmore Seventh-day

born in Skelton in Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, and she had resided here

of Trinity Episcopal Parish, and she was a volunteer at Flagler Hospital.
She was a member of Trinity's St. Elizabeth Guild, and she was active in
the choir at the church.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Burial will be at a later date at the Shady Lane Cemetery.

Clerk at Mather post office

Eva "Sis" Litten Benjamin, 91, of First Street, Mather, died at 6:40 p.m.
Friday, June 5, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 22, 1907, in Smithfield, a daughter of Harvey and Martha
Ella Moody Litten.

Mrs. Benjamin lived most of her life in Greene County, where she was a
homemaker and a clerk at the Mather post office.

She was a member of Mather Christian Church and a Sunday school teacher.

Her husband, Cliffe Benjamin, died in 1964.

Surviving are four grandchildren, Vickie Cooley of Lake Worth, Fla., Lori
Hutchinson of Graysville, Terri Litten of East View and Joni Cole of
Waynesburg; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Deceased are two sons, David R. "Pete" Litten and Charles "Gene" Nichols.

Martha Litten

Teacher was active in church choir

Martha Harbaugh Litten, 81, of Mather, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, in
Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg.

She was born April 7, 1917, in Mill Run, a daughter of Joseph and Gertrude
Stull Harbaugh.

Mrs. Litten graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936 and from Waynesburg
College. She also attended Penn State University and California State College.

She was a retired school teacher for the Jefferson-Morgan School District for
more than 26 years.

She was a lifelong resident of Mather and a member of the Carmichaels
Christian Church, having served as the choir director. For a time she also
directed the choir at Mather Christian Church. She sang for weddings and
enjoyed playing the piano.

Mrs. Litten was a member of the Greene County Retired Teachers' Association,
Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education
Association. She was the former secretary of the Dry Tavern Lions Medical
Center Association.

On June 15, 1946, she married H. Dewey Litten, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Wayne Litten of Mather; two granddaughters, Jodi
Litten of Waynesburg and Jaime Litten of Mather; a sister, Dorcas Moore of
Baden; a brother, John Harbaugh of Greensburg and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, Joe, Phil, Paul and Mark Harbaugh.

Ruby Waters of Oneida, and Wilma Monroe of Cincinnati, Ohio; three brothers:
Estel Kidd and wife, Josephine of Oneida, Carmel Kidd and wife, Irene, of
Louisville, Ky., and Arthur Kidd and wife, Ann, of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12
grandchildren, two good friends, Wanda Smith and Denise Chambers and
numerous other relatives. Funeral service was to be conducted July 1, 1998,

and Anna Lowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded also in death by
five brothers: Audney, Raymond, Tommy, Ernest, and Harvey Lowe; and one
infant son, Gary Lowe. He was a member of Five Black Gum Baptist Church, and
a retired Untied States Army veteran, have served his country for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Iva Lee Lowe; two daughters: Debbie Houde of
Wyoming, and Sandy Robbinson of Arkansas; two sons: Rick Lowe of Lebanon,
Tenn., and Brian Lowe of Selina, Ohio; four step-children: Starlette Lay of
the Ditney Trail community, Twani Litton of Huntsville, Starlin Ray Bowling,
and Timothy Bowling, both of the Straight Fork community; one sister, Ruby
Botts of Annadell, two brothers: George Lowe of Lakeland, Fla., and Bob Lowe
of Lexington, Ky.; 13 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many other
relatives. Funeral service was conducted August 20, 1998, in the chapel of
West-Murley Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Lay and Rev. Tom Owens officiating.
Interment followed in Chambers Cemetery with full military honors conducted
by Fort Campbell, Ky., Honor Guard. West-Murley Funeral Home was in charge

A memorial service for Jane Litton (nee Nicholson), 92, of the Devonshire in
Lisle, formerly of Naperville, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Knox
Presbyterian Church, 1105 Catalpa Lane, Naperville. Born Nov. 15, 1905, in
Beardstown, Ill., she died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at Edward Hospital in
Naperville. Interment will be private. Mrs. Litton had been a resident of
Naperville since 1964, having previously lived in Oak Park. She was a 1927
graduate of Knox College in Galesburg with a B.S. degree. Mrs. Litton had
been a member of the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in Oak Park for 23 years
before becoming a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville in 1964.
She was a member of the Naperville Garden Club and P.E.O. Chapter C-G in Oak
Park. She had done lots of volunteer work through church and various school
P.T.A.'s.

She is survived by her sons, David (Anne) Litton of Jensen Beach, Fla. and
Howard (Connie) Litton of Naples, Fla.; daughter, Jeanne (David) King of
Little Rock, Ark.; sister, Marion Neal of Bloomington, Minn.; 10 grand-
children; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Howard in 1965. Memorial's in Mrs. Litton's name may be made to

Coffey, Luke Edward - age 78, of Oneida, Tenn., passed away Sunday, January
31, at the Scott County Hospital in Oneida. Born in Oneida January 22, 1921.
He was the son of the late Harry and Stella Litton Coffey. He was a member
of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Oneida and a charter member of the Oneida
Lions Club. Luke was a longtime businessman, merchant, and active member of
the community. He owned and operated several businesses in the community
including Oak Grove Grocery and Quick Shop Foods as well as real estate
interest including the development of the Ponderosa Estates in Oneida. He
was known for his work in many advancements for Scott County. He was elected
as a member of the Scott County Board of Commissioners for approximately 20
years during which time he served as Scott County Judge Pro-Temp for several
years. He had served as chairman of the Scott County Hospital Board and the
Scott County Airport Board as well as many other committees. His special
interest was in the education of Scott County's children. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Wilma Coffey Stanley. He is
survived by his wife of 57 years, Rosa Lee Coffey; a daughter, Barbara
Strunk and husband, Johnny; a son, Dr. Bruce Coffey and wife, Rose Mary, all
of Oneida; four grandsons, John Christopher Strunk of Memphis, Tenn., David
Kenton Strunk of Harrogate, Tenn., Brandon Lucas Coffey of Johnson City,
Tenn. and David Alexander Coffey of Oneida. He also leaves many other
relatives and friends. Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, February
2, at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Rev. John
Shepard and Rev. Phillip Kazee officiating. Interment service will be
conducted Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Carson Memorial Park with Rev.

Clyde Lutton, 54, a former English and history teacher who co-owned an
event planning and corporate communications business in Columbia, MD, died
of liver cancer February 4, 1999, at his home in Fulton, MD. He and his
wife, Charlotte, founded The Events Organization in 1987. Earlier, he taught
at the Woodward School for boys and Maret School, and he was involved in
commercial real estate sales. He was a native of Butler, PA. He came to the
Washington area after graduating from Haverford. At Haverford, he was
captain of the golf team and was in the drama club. In subsequent years
he was involved in fund-raising programs and class reunions. He was class
chairman and a member of the Haverford College Alumni Council, and had
three times received the Alumni Cup for outstanding performance in fund-
raising. He also acted and handled stage lighting for the Silver Springs
Stage, a theater group. In addition to his wife, survivors include a
brother, Peter R. Lutton of Prospect Heights, IL, and his stepmother,
Elise D. Lutton of Lake Worth, FL.

Washington, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St.

Lutton, he married Anna Marie Johnson. She died in September 1991.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He worked at Caterpillar Inc. Services

Collins, Co.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Leigh East, David Jerome
Romagosa Jr., Nicole Marie Romagosa; Elise Achee Romagosa, Natalie Ann
Romagosa, Jerome Joseph Romagosa II, and Christopher Shirer Romagosa; two
great-grandhildren, Brittany Leigh East and Bailey Elizabeth East; and one
brother, the Rev. Msgr. Elmo L. Romagosa, a retired priest of the
Archdiocese of New Orleans living in Waveland, Miss.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Ethel May Litton Romagosa,
known as "Kizzy" by her family and friends, and his parents.

Mr. Romagosa was born on June 2, 1917 in Thibodeaux. He was the son of the
late Lawrence Gabriel Romagosa, a native of Lafourche Parish, and the former
Lydie Elodie Achee, a native of Labadieville. He served as captain in the
U.S. Army from which he was honorably discharged.

He graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1943
and began his medical practice as a "horse and buggy" doctor in Opelousas
before becoming a board certified radiologist and later a board certified
radiation oncologist.

Dr. Romagosa did post graduate work at Tulane University in New Orleans,
M.D. Anderson in Houston, the Curie Foundation in Paris. the Royal Marsdon
in London, the Christie Hospital in Manchester and the St. Luke's in Dublin.
He was the first physician to use penicillin in Louisiana, was the first
doctor to use radioactive cobalt in the treatment of cancer in Southwest
Louisiana and was the first physician in Acadiana to perform a surgical
implant of radioactive cesium. After a distinguished career as a radiation
oncologist, Dr. Romagosa retired in 1983. Following his retirement the
Romagosa Radiation Oncology Center was named for him.

After a short lived retirement, he founded Hospice of Acadiana, where he
served as the volunteer medical director for more than 10 years. During his
57 year career, Dr. Romagosa practiced as a general practitioner, a
radiologist, a radiation oncologist and a mental health physician.

Dr. Romagosa received a number of special honors during his long career. In
1985, President Reagan invited him to the White House where he was honored
as an Outstanding Senior Volunteer at a special ceremony held in the Rose
Garden. That same year he was named the Humanitarian of the Year by the
Louisiana Cattle Festival Association and received the Skip Blair Memorial
Award, which was presented by the Mental Health Association of Lafayette.

In 1986, Dr. Romagosa was honored as an Acadiana Volunteer Activist at a
special ceremony and later that year was selected to be a part of a special
U.S. Delegation to the People's Republic of China composed of Specialists
in Radiation Oncology.

Bishop Harry Flynn honored him in 1989 as an outstanding servant of the
poor; in 1992 President Bush named Dr. Romagosa as one of the "2000 Points
of Light", giving him special recognition and inviting him to tour Air Force
One and in 1998, the Louisiana State Medical Society presented him with the
Wyeth-Hearst Award for outstanding community service.

Dr. Romagosa was affectionately called "PaPa Buddy" by his grandchildren. He
authored a children's novel, La Fitte's Stowaway, for his grandchildren,
which was later published and sold to the general public. He was also a
syndicated columnist for the "Sunday Advertiser" where his "Medical Essays"
appeared for the last fifteen years. In addition to two novels and his
"Medical Essays", Dr. Romagosa has authored countless professional papers
and has been a frequent lecturer for various community and professional
groups.

A wake service will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Visiting
hours will be observed from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until the time

LONDON -- Mary Lutyens, a prolific novelist, biographer, magazine writer and
editor whose career spanned more than six decades, has died. She was 90.

Lutyens, whose father was the well-known architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and
whose maternal grandfather, the Earl of Lytton, was viceroy of India from
1876-1880, died April 9 in London. The cause of death was not announced in
newspaper notices.

Although she wrote 13 novels and excelled as an editor, she was most
acclaimed for her biographies, including writings on her father's work,
her parents' unhappy marriage and her grandfather.

She also wrote a biographical series on the Indian religious teacher
Krishnamurti, who was a spiritual adviser to her mother, and about art
critic and social theorist John Ruskin and his wife Effie.

One of her best known biographies, "Millais and the Ruskins," explored John
and Effie's relationship with Sir John Everett Millais, the father of Pre-
Raphaelite painting. It described the impact of Millais' love for Effie on
the Ruskin marriage and its eventual collapse.

"You so often have to write the book you want to read," The Daily Telegraph
quoted her as having once said.

Her autobiography, "To be Young," was published in 1959.

Lutyens was born July 31, 1908 and was educated at Queen's College in London
and in Sydney, Australia. She began her career as a fiction writer with the
1933 "Forthcoming Marriages," and wrote several novels before World War II.
After the war, she wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Esther Wyndham.
Although she continued to write novels into the 1970s, she began to focus on
writing biographies in the 1960s.

Lutyens was married twice, first to stockbroker Anthony Sewell from 1930-
1945, then to royal furrier and art expert J. G. Links in 1945. Links died
in 1997.

Gastonia - Mr. Kenneth Glenn Lytton, 84, of Gastonia, died Sunday, Oct. 10,
1999 at his home.

A native of Gastonia, he was the husband the late Mrs. Margaret Carpenter
Lytton and Mrs. Jane Land Lytton, who survives, and the son of Mr. Cullen L.
Lytton and Mrs. Hettie Sherrill Lytton, both deceased. He graduated from
Clemson University, and entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in
1941. He served in the 101 Airborne Division, the 327th Glider Infantry,
participated in the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge and was one
of the "Battered Bastards of Bastogne."

For his military service, he received many decorations including the French
and the Belgium Croix de Guerre with Palm Streamers, Netherlands Orange
Lanyard, 101st Presidential Unit Citation for both Normandy and Bastogne,
and the Purple Heart.

After World War II, he worked with General Electric Co. In 1952, he formed
Fiber Controls, which sold textile machinery worldwide.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Gastonia. He
was a member of the American Legion, World War II Last Man Club, the 101
Airborne Division Association, various civic organizations and textile
associations.

Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. Channon E. Lytton of
Texas and Mr. Glenn E. Lytton of Gastonia; two daughters, Ms. Mary E. Lytton
and Ms. Brenda Street, both of Gastonia; two brothers, Mr. Coit Lytton and
Mr. Charles Lytton, both of Gastonia; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Altman of
Lake Junaluska and Ms. Evelyn Lewis of Gastonia; stepson, Mr. Mark Freeman
of Gastonia; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Laurie Newlin of Snow Camp and Mrs.
Julie Setzer of High Point; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Lucile Feemster and Ms.
Margaret McGoogan; one brother, Mr. James Lytton. The funeral will be
conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church by Dr.
Joseph Seymour. Burial with full military honors by World War II Last
Man Club of Gaston County, will be in Gaston Memorial Park.

Ohio pedestrian hit, killed crossing highway in BR

A pickup struck and killed a 37-year-old man who tripped while trying to
cross Siegen Lane early Saturday morning, a State Police Troop A spokesman
said. Witnesses told police Charles W. Litton Jr., was running west across
Siegen near the McDonald's and Interstate 10 about 12:30 a.m., Trooper Don
Erwin said. Litton tripped and fell when he had made it about half way,
Erwin said.

Litton got back up and started running again - directly into the path of a
southbound pickup, Erwin said.

Litton of West Alexander, Ohio, died at the scene from his injuries, Erwin
said.

Witnesses said the driver, 22-year-old Michael Mulligan of Mandeville, had
the green light and was not speeding. No charges were filed against
Mulligan, Erwin said.

Police suspect Litton may have been drinking and are waiting for the results
of a blood alcohol test, Erwin said.

McDonald; two sisters, Grace Marcum and Moda Marcum; and two brothers,
William J. Marcum and Claude V. Marcum. Mrs. McDonald was a graduate of the
Oneida High School class of 1928 and attended the University of Cincinnati.
She taught school at Niggs Creek for five years and then accepted the
position of postal clerk at the Oneida Post Office in 1933. She retired from
the postal services in 1976. Mrs. McDonald, who was a member of First
Baptist Church of Oneida, is survived by one sister, Nina Leah Marcum
Crabtree of Elgin, Ill,; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives
and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, November 9, at 11
a.m. at the West-Murley Funeral Home chapel, with Rev. Keith Marcum and Rev.
Philip Kazee officiating. Special music was provided by Kay and Jennifer
Lincicome, Lula's niece and great-niece. Burial was in the Litton Cemetery

NEW BEDFORD -- Roberta (Hallett) Gracia, 49, died at home Friday, Jan. 14,
2000, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of
Donald L. Gracia and daughter of the late Carl W. and Grace (Jemphrey)
Hallett. A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she was a member of the First
Church of the Nazarene. She was a devoted and loved child care teacher at
Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School for 27 years,
and department curriculum leader for several years. Mrs. Gracia was elected
to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" and was a recipient of the Z. Walter
Janiak Spirit Award. A 1968 graduate of New Bedford High School, she
received her bachelor's degree in education from Framingham State College
and her master's degree in education from Bridgewater State College. Mrs.
Gracia was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary of Marion, Low Tide Yacht
Club of New Bedford, the Wampanoag Kennel Club of New Bedford. She was on
the Board of Directors for United Front and was active at the Schwartz
Center in New Bedford. She loved to sail in her leisure time. Survivors
include her widower; two sisters, Susan H. Lister of Swansea and Nancy H.
Marcoux of Marion; two nieces, Meghan G. Lister of Swansea and Kerrin T.
Marcoux of Marion; two nephews, Thomas D. Lister of Swansea and Ross W.
Marcoux of Marion; and one godchild, Alison Letton of New Bedford. Her
memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Church of the

KEYSER, W.Va. James Ralph "Red" Litten, 78, of 35 Southern Drive, Keyser,
died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Born on Aug. 7, 1921, in Keyser, he was the son of the late Gilbert Russell
and Nannie Carol (Swain) Litten. He also was preceded in death by his wife,
Margaret Ann (Riley) Litten, on June 13, 1992, and by four brothers; and
four sisters.

Mr. Litten was a retired security guard at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory,
Rocket Center, W.Va. He was a very active member of the Keyser Presbyterian
Church where he served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War
II, and a member of the Nancy Hanks Post 3518, VFW, Keyser.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen S. Litten, Keyser, Gina K. White and
husband, Doug, Ft. Ashby, W.Va.; one stepdaughter, Patricia A. Welch,
Baltimore; six brothers, LeeRoy Litten, Lynchburg, Va., Scott Litten, New
Creek, W.Va., Frank Litten, Keyser, Henderson Litten, McCoole, Curtis
Litten, Lusby, Wade Litten, Gibsonia, N.C.; four sisters, Millie Biser,
Burlington, W.Va., Jenny Jacox, Sandy, Utah, Ruby Kimble, Lexington, Va.,
Nancy Hester, Whiting, N.J.; three step-grandchildren, Melanie Taylor,
Fairfax, Va., Melissa Welch, Baltimore, Michael Welch, Oakland; and four
step-great-grandchildren.

Louise May Reed, 69, Camdenton, died Feb. 5, 2000, at her home.

She was born Aug. 12, 1930, in Washington, D.C., a daughter of Louis T. and
Florence L. Clementson Benson. She was married Oct. 11, 1983, in Camdenton,
to Ned Reed, who survives at the home.

A retired United States government employee, she lived in the Lake area for
the past 16 years. She was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Janice Reed, Independence; one son,
James Reed, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Shirley Lytten, Los Alamos, N.M.;
and two grandsons.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Allee-Reed Funeral Home, Camdenton.
The Rev. Keith Graves will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m.
Wednesday in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville. Visitation will be
from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday.

New Bedford -- Eliot C. Bennett, 84, of Huttleston Avenue, Fairhaven, died
Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Sacred Heart Home. He was the husband of Lucille
(LaBelle) Bennett.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Merton E. Bennett and Alberta (Terry)
Bennett, he had lived in Fairhaven for most of his life.

Mr. Bennett was employed as a radio and television technician for
Sears, Roebuck and Co. for 34 years until he retired in 1980. He attended
Fairhaven schools and took courses in radio and television repair. He was
a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven, and was a member of the
church couples club and prayer group. He was also a member and past
treasurer of the Republican Committee of Fairhaven. Mr. Bennett enjoyed
gardening, crossword puzzles, traveling, and ding time with his grand-
children, and was known for frequently writing letters to the editor.

Mr. and Mrs. Bennett were married 50 years. Survivors include two
daughters, Alice Lopez of New Bedford and Nancy O'Neill of Kingston; a
brother, Donald Bennett of Farmington, Conn.; a sister, Virginia Letton
of Fairhaven; four grandchildren, Jill-Anna Haskell and Sarah Haskell of
Cape Cod, Jason Lopez of New Bedford and Shawn O'Neill of Kingston; and
several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Pauline Haskell
and brother of the late Kenneth Bennett.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the Fairlawn Mortuary of
Sullivan-Waring, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven, with a funeral Mass at
11:00 in St. Joseph's Church, Spring Street, Fairhaven; burial will be
in Riverside Cemetery.

Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

work and the education of youth, formerly active with the Boys Scouts of
America, World War II Navy veteran.

her adult life in Port Orchard, Washington where she worked as a nurse at

Mrs. Simpson was predeceased by her husband Carl W. Simpson Jr.

Survivors include one daughter, Lorraine G. Biehn of Sarasota; two brothers,
John P. Townsend Jr. of Lorida, Florida, and James Townsend of Boothbay;
three sisters, Audrey Alston of Englewood, Florida, Jackie Drake of

GASTONIA - Frederick Samuel Lytle, 80, of Gastonia, died May 12, 2000 at
Manorhouse of Gastonia. He was a native of Black Mountain, son of the late
Joseph and Louise Lytle, husband of the late Mary Clarke Lytle, brother of
the late Mac and Tom Lytle, 1939 graduate of Lee Edwards High in Asheville,
attended University of South Carolina on a football scholarship, drafted
into the U.S. Army in 1941 where he served for six years as a lieutenant,
purple heart recipient after being wounded in France during World War II,
returned to college in 1948 where he earned his bachelor’s degree and played
basketball, worked with Buick Motor Division of General Motors as a district
representative, purchased a Buick franchise in Gastonia in 1957 which he
operated until 1987, member Gaston County Club, member First Presbyterian
Church of Gastonia.

SURVIVORS: Son and daughter-in-law, David R. and Suzanne Whitaker Lytle,
Huntersville; daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie L. and Jim May, West

Romeo Galen Lytton, 80, of Edinburg, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, in his
home.

Mr. Lytton was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Quicksburg, the son of John P. and
Orpha Zirkle Lytton. He worked as a textile worker for American Viscose,
Front Royal. He was retired from Aileen, Woodstock.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Bethel
Lutheran Church, Hamburg.

He married Fern Marie Funkhouser on Aug. 14, 1948. Mrs. Lytton died on Sept.
22, 1996.

Surviving are four sons, Ronnie Lytton and Danny Lytton, both of Edinburg,
Ricky Lytton of Woodstock, and Bobby Lytton of Stephens City; a daughter,
Cheryl Truban of Winchester; a sister, Fern Lytton of Quicksburg; and three
brothers, Allen Lytton of Fairfax, and Fred Lytton and Olga Lytton, both of
Edinburg.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church, with the Rev.
Kenn Nilsen and the Rev. John F. Taylor Jr. officiating. Burial will be in
the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Dellinger
Funeral Home, Mt. Jackson.

THOMPSON, FANNIE LOUISE 1926-2000 – 73, of Oneida, passed away on Wednesday
evening July 19, 2000 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Knoxville. She was the
daughter of the late Arthur Thomas and Rosetta Litton Thomas and was also
preceded in death by an infant son, Jimmy Keith Thompson; a granddaughter,
Katrina Cross; and a brother-in-law, Clifton Cross. Mrs. Thompson was a
longtime member of First Baptist Church of Oneida and served as secretary
of the Bible Learners Class. She was a member of the Scott County Fair
Association for twenty years, a secretary for the U.T. Extension Service
for 21 years, and a member of the local D.A.V. Auxiliary. She is survived
by her husband, Harold Thompson of Oneida; two sons, Raymond Thompson and
wife Loretta, and Curtis Thompson and wife Matilda of Oneida; four
daughters, Linda Cross and husband Bernard, Brenda Chitwood and husband
Gary, and Carolyn Daniel and husband Bob, all of Oneida, and Sheila Strunk
and husband Joe of Knoxville; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Adilene Cross of Oneida, and Mattie Phillips and husband
Verldon of Mason, O.; a special niece, Jenny Martin and husband Allen of
Oneida; several other nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and

Carthage for 10 years, after moving from Lamar, where she had lived most
of her life.

Mrs. Letton owned and opeated the Ben Franklin store in Lamar.

She married Earle Williams on Dec. 8, 1912, at Webb City, Mo. He died Sept.
25, 1964. She then married Forrest M. Letton on Aug. 8, 1967, at Lamar. He
died march 15, 1974.

Mrs. Letton was a member of the First Christian Church, Lamar, where she
taught the teenagers' Sunday school class. She belonged to the Mt. Hope
Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Home and Garden Club, both
in Lamar.

Survivors include one daughter, Florene Michaels of Carthage, one grand-
daughter, four great-grandchildren and four-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home
Chapel, Lamar, with minister Doug Oakes officiating. Burial will be in Lake
Cemetery, Lamar. Arrangements are under the direction of Lohmeyer-Konantz

SENECA -- John Joseph Olberding, 72, formerly of Seneca, died Saturday, Dec.
16, 2000, at his home in Cleveland, Okla.

He was born Nov. 24, 1928, in Seneca, where he spent his early life and
attended schools. He was instrumental in establishing the racetrack in
Seneca where he lived until the early 1960s. He was a carpenter and lived
at Kaw Lake, Okla., and later in Eureka Springs, Ark., before he moved to
Cleveland, Okla., in 1994. While in Eureka Springs, he was a trolley driver
and a member of the Passion Play cast.

He married Freda Stapleton on July 5, 1981, in Golden City, Mo. She
survives. Other survivors include a son, Keith Olberding, Summerfield; three
daughters, Marceil Feldkamp, Effingham, Karleen Merritt, Meriden, and Diane
Condenie, Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Robert Olberding, Seneca; six
sisters, Dorlyn Huerter, Omaha, Lois Boeding, Kansas City, Mo., Glenda Earl,
Papillion, Neb., Joyce Karst, Falls City, Neb., Sharon Renfrow, Independence,
Mo., and Bonnie Lytton, Lee's Summit, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-
granddaughter.

Mr. Olberding was cremated. Inturnment services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday
at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, Okla.

Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Clark was born Sept. 2, 1939, in Cherry Run, W.Va., the daughter of
Marshall and Margie Litten Starliper. She worked at Perfection Garment in
Martinsburg and at Calburn Sewing Factory in Hancock, Md.

She owned and operated V&S Contracting and Clark’s Ceramics, both in
Berkeley Springs. She worked in housekeeping at The Country Inn and as
a bagger at Food Lion, both in Berkeley Springs.

She attended Berkeley Springs Church of Christ and Cherry Run School.

She was married to Vernon Clark. Her first husband was Russell Allen Carr.

Surviving are four daughters, Delores Carr of Martinsburg, Amy Carr and
Cheryl Smith, both of Berkeley Springs, and Drema Lloyd of Hagerstown, Md.;
two sons, Russell Carr of Berkeley Springs and Piphat Todd Carr of
Hedgesville, W.Va.; four sisters, Betty Silver and Oleta Cain, both of
Berkeley Springs, Mary Apple of Cherry Run, and Dorothy Stuckey of
Martinsburg; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home,
Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Henry L. Fisher officiating. Burial

She was a member of Salt Rock United Methodist Church. She is survived by

Former Powell resident Larry A. Litton, 63, died Thursday, Jan. 4 in
Gainesville, Fla. He was born April 14, 1937, in Powell. His parents were
Arthur G. Litton and Velma Anderson Litton. In 1945, his stepfather and
mother, Calvin and Velma Darling, adopted him. He was graduated from Powell
High School in 1956. In November, 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for
three years.

In August, 1958, he and Joanne Taylor were married in Pittsburg, Pa. Their
four children were born in Wyoming. Joanne died in 1995. In 1961, he began
his career with Bell Telephone Co., and in April, 1999, he retired from Bell
South. He married Janice Sulcer in St. Augustine, Fla., on Oct. 31, 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Janice, of Holly Hill, Fla; his mother, Velma
Darling of Powell; his four children, Laurie Szarmack and Kelly Colburn of
Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Michael Litton of Miami, Fla., and Joseph Litton of
Pennsylvania; two sisters, Elieen Nicoll and husband Bruce of Kennewick,
Wash., and Vickie Yale and husband Craig of Salt Lake City, Utah; six
grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
