TOPIC: Four Lectures for Saturday, October 4, 2008 Libraries, Archives and Public Record Offices: Understanding Resource Repositories This lecture explores various sources of old records: what they are, their importance, and what challenges they present. Then it describes the repositories where they are found: libraries, historical societies, public record offices, public archives, private institutions, and private archives. The lecture addresses ways to find the repositories you need and the means to access them, including the internet, genealogy manuals, guides, catalogs and indexes.
Lesser-Used Federal Records: A Sampling for Fresh Research Ideas
Whenever the path of an ancestor’s life intersected with a federal government agency, paperwork was created. Discussion includes: 1) passport applications, 1791-1925; 2) homestead files, beginning 1862; 3) Civil War Income Tax records, 1862-1872; 4) The Journals of Congress, 1789-1873; 5) Appointments of Postmasters, 1789-1971; 6) Federal Court records, 1789-1911; 7) Civil War draft registration records, 1863-1865.
Visiting Ancestral Towns in Europe: How to Avoid the Mistakes I Made!
Before you do it all wrong, he will share with you, in ten lessons, the way to avoid the mistakes he made when he flew off to his ancestral European towns UNPREPARED in 1975 when he was an eager and earnest young family historian in 1975.
Assembling and Writing a Narrative Family History
This lecture addresses the joys and challenges of your final product: a written, reliable document, of your discoveries. Remember you will be trying to produce a readable story for future generations.
