Jane writes: 'The author’s surname is not mentioned, but after extensive research I have been able to determine that this is the author. There are census, marriage and military records for the Ewan family in Sparta Township, Dearborn Co, at that time. The names on these records match the family names/dates found in the diary. The records I found give the surname as EWAN, but there were also people with the surname EWING in that area, so I’m not positive which one is correct. Some of the surnames are only mentioned once or twice, while others are found throughout the diary. Those mentioned most often are: OLCOTT (relatives of the author), DAVIS, LANE, MILLER, WHEELER, SUTTON, and BIGNEY. Based on place names, churches, cemeteries, etc mentioned in the diary, she apparently lived somewhere in the Chesterville area.
