President's Corner

Impact!!
The definition, "the striking of one thing against another, to have an impact or effect on; influence; alter."

The Polk County Genealogical Society had a few impacts in 2015. One "impact" of note happened in December and was something that had never happened in the life of our building which has graced the corner of Jackson Street and Springfield Avenue for 100 years. Springfield Ave. has a slight curve to it and, if a vehicle does not make this curve, then it would come right up to our building, which is exactly what happened.

It was 6 a.m. on a Wednesday morning when a car driven by a woman, 90 years old, missed the gentle curve on Springfield Ave. and proceeded to take out the stop sign, fire hydrant and our PCGS sign. It then came to rest at the northeast corner of the building. The car was totaled but the driver walked away with just cuts and bruises. Our building withstood the impact quite well with the only damage being to our sign and to the corner stone--both of which will be replaced by her insurance. As you can imagine, we were all glad that our facility was not open at that time!

Our other "impact" will be to the environment and with the good stewardship of the money that comes from your dues and donations. The two largest bills at PCGS are the insurance and electric bills. Our endowment fund with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks generates just enough interest to cover the yearly insurance bill. The electric bill can, in some years, be quite the struggle to handle, even with all of the energy improvements we have done to the building.

The board explored solar power options and then signed a contract with Solar Rich Power to apply for Empire Electric’s rebate program for installing solar panels on the roof of the building. This rebate only pays for a portion of the total cost but Solar Rich Power has a non-profit lease program that will lower our total cost to about $130 a month. The power generated by the panels is fed back to the electric company and applied as a credit to our bill. The size of the system installed should generate enough power to offset all, if not most, of our electric bill each month. Our bills in the winter can reach upwards of $300 to $400 in a cold January or February and that is with our thermostats set at 62 degrees. "Going Green" never sounded so good!

****************************
Please try to be patient with the volunteers--at PCGS the volunteers know the collection and have helped hundreds of people just like you find that probate, obituary or long lost family history. They also have a love of the craft and travelers. We have all visited those places where the staff grunts and points to the genealogical section. Not here at PCGS! You will always be greeted with enthusiasm and helpfulness. Be generous--share your data with the facility and leave as large of a donation as you can. Those donations and your support are what keep our doors open and the lights on, four days a week year round. We look forward to your visit!

Susan Sparks, President
