The Shaker Lot |
|
Twenty-four persons signed the Petition to Close Union
Village before it was sold to United Brethren Church. Following are the names
of sixteen of those Shakers who were buried in Lebanon Cemetery, because there
was no longer any "Shaker Land" available for their burial. Others
of the 24 went to Canterbury, or scattered elsewhere. The ownership of the
plot is listed as "Shakers, Arthur Bruce Trustee." The place of
death on the individual records is listed, variously, as "Shaker Village,
Ohio," "Lebanon, Ohio," "Shakertown, Ohio," and "Union
Village, Ohio." In all cases, the undertaker is designated as "Oswalds."
also see Union Village and the Shakers of
Warren County, Ohio for additional Shaker information that can be found
on the Warren County OHGenWeb and elsewhere.

The large SHAKER monument (1805-1920 ) is in the center of
a large grassy plot. Lebanon Cemetery records (coordinated with other sources)
document that at least sixteen Shakers are buried in Section C, Lots 99,
100, 147 and 148, although portions of 147 and 148 were owned by someone
other than the Shakers. |

|
It was not the practice of the Union
Village Shakers to put gravestones on individual graves, instead they
often planted cedar trees to mark the spot a person was buried. The single
evergreen bush seen in this photograph may have been planted with that
in mind. |
 |
Well hidden by the low limbs of the evergreen bush is the only single
gravestone on the Shaker Lot: that of
James H. Fennessey (1853-1928) the last Union
Village Shaker in Warren County. [click

Also,
GOEPPER, LEOPOLD - 1827/1915 - These dates are taken
from his death certificate.
The Lebanon Cemetery records do not show that he was buried there. However,
other records say that he was "cremated in Cincinnati, buried in
Lebanon." |
