Shakers of Union Village
North Family Cemetery

(listed as the East Shaker Cemetery in some references)

Looking West

The cemetery was visited by Warren County Genealogical Society volunteer, Katherine Lollar Rowland, in August, 2004 as part of the Warren County Virtual Cemetery project.  In view of the pending sale of the park where the cemetery is located to the Warren County Park District, Warren County Genealogical Society representatives revisted the cemetery in July, 2008 to view the location and condition of the stones.  Additional photos that were taken while we were there have been added to this page.
Katherine Lollar Rowland writes,

"Many inferences have been made in articles and lectures,to the effect that the Shakers did not put monuments on gravesites. However, there were, apparently, exceptions, at least toward the last years of Union Village. Five markers, complete with names, now stand in the old North Family Cemetery; in addition, there are two field stones without names; and one concrete base with marker missing. "

Location:
  • The cemetery is located in the on the west side of State Route 741 about 1.3 miles north of State Route 63. The cemetery is on the east side of the service road heading south from the main entrance to the park in a large grassy enclosure surrounded by tall walnut trees. A sale of the property to the Warren County Park District is pending but until the sale is completed, the Park is a private facility. To visit the burial ground, you will first have to obtain permission at the main Gate.

Transcriptions:
  • D.A.R. Turtlecreek Chapter & Warren County Historical Society (available at the Historical Society Library)
    • Early Vital Records Volume 21, page 135
[I believe that this is a list of burials in the cemetery located at the intersection of Routes 63 & 741. I don't think it includes burials in the North Family Cemetery.]
  • Warren County Genealogical Society
    • Not currently included in any of the society publications.  Information from the photos taken by Katherine Lollar Rowland and other society volunteers will be used to add  the cemetery to the new cemetery books planned by the society.
  • Other Known Transcriptions
    • None known of
Variant Names:
  • The cemetery is listed as "East Shaker" in the GNIS system and elsewhere which we believe is incorrect. The cemetery is located immediately west of the site of the "North Family" at Union Village and a considerable distance from the site where the "East Family" of the Shakers was located.
