Harold Edward Nies was born June 8, 1922 to Peter and Ethel (Ryan) Nies in Draper. He was raised on a farm south of Java. He attended rural school and graduated from Java High School in 1940. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the U.S. Navy.
He married Helen Witlock on June 10, 1949 at Java. They lived in the Java area until 1957 when they bought a farm northwest of Bowdle. In 1994 they moved to Winner.

Survivors include his wife of Winner; three daughters: Mrs. Brian (Patti) Hoffmeier of Arvada, CO; Mrs. Dan (Bobbi) Veidt of Winner; and Mrs. Gene (Cindy) Bennett of Sioux city, IA; three brothers: Winfred Nies of Highland, IN; George Nies of Palm Springs, CA; and Richard Nies of Bellevue, WA; one sister: Mrs. R.L. (Marge) Boehler of Java; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.
