His funeral was Oct. 1, at the Tolstoy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Orland Sloat officiating. Burial followed at the German Zion Congregational Cemetery at Tolstoy under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle.
Henry Dickhaut was born Nov. 4, 1909 at Odessa, Russia, to John and Katherine (Dickhaut) Dickhaut. When he was 9 months old, he moved with his family to America, first settling at Lesterville. In 1922 he moved with his family to Madison township in Edmunds County. In 1929 he moved with his parents to a farm southwest of Tolstoy.
He married Evelyn Wolff June 13, 1934, at the home of her parents near Onaka. They lived and farmed in the Onaka and Tolstoy area. In 1955 they moved into Tolstoy and he worked for 17 years at Banik Elevator and also was janitor at the Tolstoy Town Hall.
Following his retirement he helped on the farms of Kenny Stephan and Larry Trefz until his health failed in 1989. He and his wife moved to Brandon July 31, 1992 to be near family.
He was a member of the Tolstoy United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School treasurer for 30 years. He also was a member of the Church Men's Club. He belonged to the Tolstoy ABC Community Club from its beginning and helped with many projects. He was also a 4-H leader for five years. He loved gardening and his main interest in life was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Brandon; three sons: Donald Dickhaut and wife, Delores of Denver, CO; Jerry Dickhaut and wife, Judy of Casper, WY; and Rich Dickhaut of LaQuinta, CA; four daughters: Mrs. Charles (Bette) Niles of Fresno, CA; Karen Kurkowski of Omaha, NE; Mrs. Lyle (Beverly) Pfeifle of Brandon; and Mrs. Don (Alyce) Sutton of Fresno, CA; one sister: Mrs. Albert (Rose) Bertsch of Aberdeen; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter in infancy, one brother and two grandchildren.
