Macon County, Georgia Researchers and Transcribers

:Many genealogists have developed personal websites as a way to share their research with others. Some researchers have taken the idea of sharing their genealogical data one step further, and use their sites to host original or transcribed records. In many cases, these researchers use their own time and resources to collect and transcribe records for the benefit of the genealogical community. The ladies of the Macon County, Georgia website are researchers who do just that.

Margie Glover-Daniels, Millie Stewart, Guelda Hay and Davine Campbell have spent countless hours locating and transcribing records for Macon County, Georgia. The site is part of the GAGenWeb Project, and contains a wide variety of information provided by each of the site owners and other genealogists who have submitted records.

The significance of website lies in the amount of information that has been transcribed from original records. These searchable transcriptions include censuses, obituaries, family bibles and marriage books, to name a few. The site also contains various informational topics such as naming patterns, historic post office locations, and war links that are useful to a wide array or researchers.

Possibly the most significant section of the site is the cemetery records. These ladies have located and transcribed every known Macon County cemetery. The ninety-five cemeteries are listed alphabetically, and contain a written description of the location in addition to the transcribed tombstones.

In addition to transcribing information off the tombstones, these volunteers have developed a system to collect and record the burial information of unmarked graves. This is done by locating information in obituaries. The obituaries commonly provide the location, names and dates for the gravesites, which can then be used to locate the burial sites.

Although there is a vast amount of information on the site, there is always a chance that the needed information is not yet available on the site. Should this be the case, researchers can post and view queries to the Macon County query board. This allows researchers to connect with others who may be able to help break down the brick wall in their research. Researchers are also encouraged to share their findings by submitting records on the RootsWeb.com GAMACON mailing list, or through the Macon County volunteer form.

The persistence and dedication of these great volunteers to continuously provide quality resources for researchers makes Margie, Millie, Guelda and Davine valuable assets to RootsWeb.com, as well as the entire genealogical community.

On behalf of the genealogical community, we thank you.
