Know all men by these presents that whereas I Jane Groce have this day in conjunction with James L. Groce, Sarah J. Groce, and George S. Groce, Sold Conveyed & delivered to Henry Keys a certain negro slave named Davy of dark complexion and about sixteen years old in consideration of the sum of one thousand Dollars Cash paid by Said Keys. Now therefore in consideration of the premises and the better to secure Said Keys from any loss in his purchase of Said Slave from any better claim than that paid by him and for and in consideration of the sum of One Dollar to Me in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. I have bargained Sold and Conveyed, and by these presents do bargain sell and convey unto the Said Henry Keys his heirs and assigns forever all that tract of land situated in the County and State aforesaid being a part of the John M Hensley league. Beginning at a Stake Edward Breeding’s corner, a Post bears S60W47 varas a Ditto bears N6W6 varas. Thence N47E747 varas to a Stake, a post Oak bears S57°W5½ varas a Black Jack bears N37°E4 varas. Thence S43°W738 varas to a Stake Wm J.M. Lyons corner a Post Oak bears N43°E3 varas. A Ditto bears bears (sic) N47°W5 varas. Thence N47°W along said Lyons line 890 varas to a Stake in the East bank of a creek from which a Hackberry bears N21E41½ varas. Thence up said creek with its meanders to a small drain, Thence up said drain with its meanders to the place of beginning. Containing one hundred and twenty four acres & 97/100 more or less. To have and to hold the Same with the improvements thereon and appurtenances unto the Said Henry Keys his heirs and assigns forever. Provided always, nevertheless, upon the express condition that this Mortgage is only intended as a Security from me to Said Keys for Said Slave for and during the time of five years from the date hereof, in other words and to be more explicit this Mortgage is above intended to Secure Said Keys from having said negro taken from him or the value thereof by any title better than that conveyed to him as above set forth during the time just specified and it is distinctly understood that this indemnity is not to cover acidents (sic) of any kind and nothing save the one circumstance herein specified, it is further expressly provided that if said slave within the time specified should not be taken from Said Keys by a title better and paramount to the one conveyed him as above, then at the end of said time, this Mortgage shall cease determine and become absolutely null and void to all intent and purposes. Otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my scroll as a seal on this 2nd day of December A.D. 1853.

Know all men by these presents that I Jane Groce for and in consideration of a certain promisor note bearing even date herewith for the sum of two hundred dollars, executed to James Reynolds and due twelve months from date with eight percent interest from date, and the better to secure the payment of the same and for the further consideration of One Dollar to me in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have bargained Sold and Conveyed, as by these presents bargain Sell & Convey unto the said James Reynolds his heirs & assigns a certain Negro Slave named Dan about thirteen years old. To have and to hold the same unto said Reynolds his heirs and assigns forever. Always Provided, that upon the payment of said note this mortgage shall cease determine and become null and void to all intents & purposes and further provided that the possession of Said Slave shall remain with Me. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my scroll as a Seal this December the 2nd 1853.
