Interment Places of African-American Persons in Kaufman County Texas

Donated by: Kathey Hunt, Co-Coordinator of Kaufman Co., Texas TXGenWeb Project

The following are all known marked burial sites that contain the remains of African-American persons buried in Kaufman County Texas. The words *FORMER SLAVE on any of the Kaufman County cemetery records denote persons proven to have lived a portion of their lives in bondage. We have so noted them as to pay homage to those individuals and as a reminder to all who see these pages that they will never be forgotten.

**NOTE: These burials all have tombstones or some type of inscribed marker – those graves of persons in Unmarked Graves are in another section

Barrow Plantation Cemetery

Near the Kaufman-Hunt County Line In the North Gossett Community

History: This site was given to the Black plantation workers as a place to inter their dead. Many of them lived full time on the plantation, and many were freed slaves who once were the property of the Barrow family. When the site was inspected it was apparent that there are at least twenty graves here, where the land has sunken in, yet very few markers.

Cedar Grove Black Cemetery

Located in the Old Cedar Grove community

CONDITION: very bad

LOCATION: Northeast section of Kaufman County , Texas in the Cedar Grove Community.

HISTORICAL: History of the cemetery is unknown but the residents of this community had slaves and it appears they chose a place just north of their own burial site to bury their slaves. First marked burial is 1856. This cemetery was enumerated by the Arlene and Wilbert Jurgens in July 1990 and again by Cheryl Vaughn and Linda Feagin Harwell, October 03, 2001 . The cemetery was overgrown with Johnson grass and many of the stones on the first enumeration were not found, some were added to this enumeration. Asterisk (*) indicates those that were not located in the last enumeration. These stones are probably there, but the weeds were so tall, unable to locate. Perhaps about an acre in size.
