Improvement Districts - Municipal District

Hello and Welcome! I'm Vikki Gray, your County Coordinator for Banff County, Alberta. I manage the site but it is your site, so feel free to offer suggestions or pitch in and help! You may want to look at the volunteer section below to find ways in which you can help.  I am sorry but I cannot do research because I do not live in Banff County, although my ancestors lived in neighboring Clearwater County.

Banff National Park extends along the Alberta British Columbia border. On the south is Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. On the British Columbia side of the border is Kootenay National Park and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park.. Jasper National Park is located north of Banff. On the East side of the park part of the Rocky Mountain Forest Reserve is located. The Municipal District of Bighorn is located east of Banff National Park and north of the Improvement District of Kananaskis.

Banff National Park was the first National Park in Canada. Each year about four million people visit the park. In the summer the come to see the abundant wild animals and to take pictures or paint the beautiful mountains and lakes. In the winter some of the worlds best skiing sites are always busy.

Although there is a lot of history here there hasn't been a lot of people live permanently in this area. Therefore there isn't a lot of genealogical information available. But we will be glad to try and help you find what is available.

  • Do you have any Local History books that you would be willing to use for an occasional lookup request?
  • Would you be willing to post Banff County obituaries on the GenConnect boards?
  • Would you be willing to transcribe local cemeteries or photograph local historical buildings?
  • Do you visit the local library occasionally? If so, could you do a lookup while you are there?
  • Do you have access to some other historical records, such as wills, diaries, census returns, etc. that you would be willing to transcribe?
  • Do you have any old Banff County yearbooks you would be willing to index or do a lookup in?
  • If you do research in Banff County or at the Alberta Archives for a fee, let me know. I will post that in the appropriate area also.
