The most inexpensive place ($6.95 us funds) I have found to purchase a domain name is Hostway.
Domain Name; ancestry.com, mgrclub.com, yourname.org. onlinebanking.net , hostway.com are all domain names

Click on;
on the right hand side you will see;

Type in the name you would like to see if it is available. Such as mgrclub.com (obviously this one is taken)
You will then be brought to a page like this;

Your choices will be to register as it is not taken, choose a different but similar or search again for a different name.
Once you have found an available one, click
Registration is straight forward, fill in the blanks and pay.
Save the email you receive from hostway after registration.
You now own a domain.
For the world to see this domain you need to create and host a web page.
Hosting is where you store it, Canaca.com is the least expensive and Netfirms.com is free.
Netfirms is free, but they put a banner ad at the top of your page and you are limited in size. A beginner usually does not need alot of bandwidth and netfirms will work for you. If you find you exceed your space you can always then pay to host it through Canaca.com or elsewhere.

You will be brought to a page with

You will then see
Click *I already own this domain* and enter your purchased domain name and click search
you will then be brought to;

save email from netfirms
in about 24 hours from your hostway purchase you can manage your nameservers
Go to http://hostway.com/ and login using the information from your email from them (username and password)
is at the bottom of the page, click customer login
after you have entered username and password you will be brought to;
a page that on the left has;

you will then see this;

The first two are the important ones, if you have hosted with netfirms put in
ns1.netfirms.com in primary dns hostname
ns2.netfirms.com in the secondary dns hostname
click update
In about 12-24 hours the site is ready for you to *upload* the page you will be learning how to create with frontpage or publisher.
