Firemen's Ball Was a Big Success.
Opera House Beautifully Decorated for the Occasion. Splendid Music and a fine
Supper. Many Enjoy the Evening.
In the past the fireman's ball has always been looked upon as the social
success of the season in Calgary. Each ball given by the firemen seems to outdo
the previous one. This applies particularly to the fourteenth annual ball which
took place in the opera house last night. To say that it was a success is using
a very mild term.
That the ball was the most successful ever given-- and this means a very great
deal-- is beyond doubt. The arrangements were perfect. The only thing to cause
disappointment was the size of the opera house. While it is the largest public
hall in the city it was not capable of accommodating the great number of
guests. But the various committees hustled about and made everything as
pleasant as possible.
Weeks ago when the firemen decided on the date of the ball the fire laddies
determined to have something new in the decorating line. Monday and yesterday
willing hands transformed the ordinary looking interior of the opera house into
a sight of great beauty. "What beautiful decorations!" were words
heard from the lips of scores of people as they entered the theatre. And there
was reason for the exclamation. It was not alone the usual bunting, evergreens,
flags, etc., that composed the decorations, but beautiful designs in electric
bulbs. The incandescent lamps in their multi-colored globes gave a very
brilliant effect.
The galleries were filled with spectators during the entire evening. From the
balcony the scene of the fine gowns of the ladies down below and the gentlemen
in their evening clothes, was one long to be remembered. Excellent music was
provided for the dances. The Fire Brigade band, under the able leadership of
Crispin E. Smith, and the large orchestra discoursed sweet music. The supper
which was served was a splendid one.
Altogether too much credit cannot be given to the firemen for providing such an
excellent ball. The committees who had charge of the affair were as follows:
Reception and floor committee:-- Chief Jas. Smart, Asst. Chief H. McClelland,
Sec. Ev. D. Marshall, Capt. A. Bassett, Capt. W. G. Zeigler, Capt. E. J.
Fletcher, R. A. Bell, J. W. Mitchell, Lieut. F. Tarrant.
