Half Yearly Report
of the Building Inspector.
The Total Amount of Buildings for the First
Six Months of 1904 Exceeds the Whole of the Previous Twelve Months.
Ample testimony of Calgary's great growth in the building line is furnished by
the half yearly report of James Smart, the building inspector, which was
presented to the city council last night.
The report shows that the permits granted so far this year numbered 175 as
against 129 for the whole of last year.
The cost of the buildings is placed at $377,548 by the applicants for permits,
but this falls far short of the actual cost. Many appear to think that the
assessment is compiled from the building inspector's figures and consequently
have made out their permits on the low side.
Others have gone on and put up buildings without securing the permit. It keeps
the inspector busy watching the new buildings to see that proper permits are
secured. One day he might go along a street and see a vacant lot. Three days
later a foundation is laid for a house and the carpenters are at work.
It would therefore in estimating the buildings be safe to say that the cost
will total up to close on half a million dollars. Adding to the applicants own
estimation of the cost of the buildings, which invariably have a tendency to
exceed the estimate 25 per cent., the cost of the buildings for the first six
months would be $473,935, which is excess of the whole of the year 1903.
And there seems to be no diminution of the building, so that before the end of
the year between three-quarters and a million dollars worth of buildings will
have been constructed.
The building inspector collects one mill per dollar for the building permits.
The building inspector's report was accompanied by a letter setting forth the
work necessitated by the great amount of building and asking suitable
remuneration. At present Mr. Smart's salary is the ridiculously small sum of
$15 per month.
