C. M. R. Ball Proved a Splendid Success.

Several of the Men Left However Before it was over for the Fire. The Troops have a fine Place for Drill.

"There was a sound of revelry by night and bright the lights shone o'er fair women and brave men." This was the scene at the first annual ball by the Canadian Mounted Rifles to celebrate the opening of their new hall.
But, as with the historic predecessor, the gaitey was rudely broken up by a loud alarm-- not of war, but of fire, and the dancers quickly dispersed to render any aid possible at one of the most disastrous fires the city has experienced. It is seldom that ladies and gentlemen in evening dress are seen standing to watch a burning building in the early hours of the morning, but this was the case last Thursday night.
Until the fire bell rang the ball room was indeed a pretty sight. The profusion of tastily arranged red, white and blue drapings, the dark streamers of evergreen, the scores of union jacks, the pretty screens,  pictures and shields, together with the artistic arrangement of swords and rifles on the walls gave the ball and card rooms a distinctly military appearance. There was nothing war-like about it all, however. The spirit of amiability and pleasure prevailed everywhere and the guests agreed unanimously that no dance of the season in its opening hours, had been more thoroughly enjoyable than that given by the officers and men of "G" squadron.
The one regret expressed during the evening was that so few of the N. W. M. P. were able to be present. They were very much missed and there were many laments over their absence.
The Canadian Mounted Rifles are to be heartily congratulated on having secured such comfortable quarters as are afforded by the new drill hall, and it is hoped that the men will enjoy very many pleasant evenings in the recreation and mess rooms of the building.
The lower floor contains two large rooms which will be used for drill purposes. The smaller one will serve as a shooting gallery. These were the rooms used Thursday night for dancing and cards and for the ladies dressing room.
The upper storey is divided into one large and two smaller rooms. The large room was the one in which Jordan served a very excellent supper to the C. M. R.'s guests, the decorations of plants in bloom and of trophies won in various competitions, giving the tables a very handsome appearance. Conspicuous among the prizes was the grand challenge cup won by the Territorial Rifle association.
This room will be furnished with a piano, chairs and tables and will be a general assembly room for the corps. Along its sides are arranged many lockers in which uniforms, saddlery, etc., are to be kept.
The two smaller rooms on the second flat will be the sergeants' and officers' mess rooms. Only the latter is as yet furnished; but its comfortable chairs, warm curtains and carpet, inviting looking sideboard and large couch make one feel that it would not be half bad "to go and be a sodger"-- in times of peace at least.
The music furnished for the ball was by Bagley's orchestra, and as usual was all that could be desired.
