Chess Tourney Results.
Saturday concluded two week's play at the Y.M.C.A. rooms. As the tournament
progresses it increases in interest, the players vieing with each other for
superiority. Dr. E. Wills' debut has added a new zest to the competition. There
is a dash about his style of play that makes it striking and attractive. He is
playing a strong game with an opening to which his opponents are new and
unaccustomed (pawn to bishop four known in the old country as Bird's opening)
and places his opponents in a quandary at the outset ending in a brilliant
finish, for the doctor without playing a long game. He has already placed three
points to his credit out of five matches.
D. J. Dewar is doing well with his favorite opening, the Ruy Lapez. F. B.
Cooper is playing a steady game and after losing his first two games to Meakin
and Tomkins he is beginning to win. Incidents:
R. H. Wood beat C. T. Gilbert; G. H. Meakin beat R. Lake; Dr. Wills beat G. H.
Meakin; R. Lake beat Dr. Wills; N. Tomkins beat W. Hobman; J. Goodmanson and W.
Poole drew; H. Macdonald lost to H. C. Richards; W. Poole and H. Dormer drew.
