Western Election Returns

RESULTS OF VOTING IN WESTERN MUNICIPALITIES SO FAR AS OBTAINED.

Macleod, Dec. 9.-- The election of municipal officers and school trustees passed off quietly today although much interest was manifested. The ratepayers were keen to get men to represent them in the various offices who were eminently qualified to serve the best interests of the town. The result of the vote was satisfactory to the majority, and on all sides it is acceded that a better choice could not have been made.
The present mayor, D. J. Grier was re-elected by a splendid majority, and from his past record this was to be expected. R. J. Macdonnell, who was elected to the council, polled the largest vote of any candidate.
This also was expected as Mr. Macdonnell has for years been foremost in the business and political affairs of Macleod.
Colin Macleod polled the heaviest vote for school trustee, and as a young attorney whose life is still before him the confidence expressed by the people indicate a future in the political arena.
The vote cast was as follows: For mayor, Grier, 97; Fawcett, 60.
For councillors-- Macdonnell, 98; Milburn, 95; Dickson, 75; Atkins, 73; McDonald, 61; Malone, 27.

Medicine Hat.
Medicine Hat, Dec. 9.-- The burgesses of Medicine Hat voted on three bylaws today. The first one which called for the exemption from taxation for ten years of the flour mill and elevator of the Medicine Hat Milling company, was defeated by a vote of 109 to 78, the necessary two-thirds vote not being secured. by Bennett & Hamilton, conditional on the spur line being constructed. The third bylaw calling for the expenditure of $40,000 for the construction of cement sidewalks was carried by 153 to 34. The smallness of the vote polled is attributed to the fact that an election for mayor and aldermen was rendered unnecessary through these offices all being filled by acclamation.

Vote in Winnipeg Today.

Winnipeg, Man., Dec 10.-- An unusually heavy vote is being cast today at the various polling stations for controllers and aldermen, the interest centering in the fight for the former, where seven candidates are striving for four vacancies, the contest being all the keener because five of these are definitely in fight in support of the policy of retrenchment as advocated by Mayor Ashdown, re-elected last week by acclamation; while the two other candidates are retiring controllers, Garson and Cockburn, who led the opposition to the mayor, and who insisted on an early construction of the municipal power plant. Great effort is being made by both sides to get out all the vote possible, and indications up to noon are that the total vote cast will be far the heaviest in the history of the city. With the exception of Winnipeg, this is nomination day in Manitoba cities and towns, though elections are being held in the municipalities.
