The movement to induce John A. McDougell a 
member of the firm of McDougall & Secord, who is 
admitted to be among the most successful 
businessmen in the west, to become a candidate 
for the position of mayor of the city at the 
forthcoming municipal elections, has assumed 
large proportions, and to a requisition 
circulated by a number of ratepayers, interested 
in having a firm hand at the financial helm of 
the city's affairs next year, over four hundred 
and fifty ratepayers have attached their names 
pledging their support to Mr. McDougall, The 
lists are still in circulation

When the requisition was presented to Mr. 
McDougall yesterday he assured those who 
undertook the circulation of the requisitions 
that he would allow himself to be made a 
mayoralty candidate. A partial list of the 
signatures signed to the requisitions is as 
follows.

In response to the requisition McDouglall was 
issued the following statement over his 
signature.

At the urgent solicitation of many friends, 
supplemented by the requisition signed by such a 
large and influential number of ratepayers, who, 
I am informed endorsed the call freely and 
unhesitatingly, asking me to accept the 
nomination for the mayoralty. I have finally 
consented to do so. I do so, not that I am 
anxious for the position, because I have on 
several previous occasions declined to be 
considered at all, but through a sense f duty 
which I feel I owe in common with all good 
citizens who have the welfare and prosperity of 
the city at heart and who should if opportunity 
offers, be willing to sacrifice their 
inclinations for the public good.

If elected as mayor I can only promise to feely 
give my time, and to use my best endeavors to 
advance the best interests of our city as 
comprised within the four corners of the 
corporation, and to do justice to all sections 
without fear of favor and in such manner that I 
will earn difficult though it may be the 
approval and with the commendation of all 
sections of the city and all classes of rate 
payers.
