St. Hilda's Closing Exercises.

The initial exercises in connection with St. Hilda's formal closing were held on Thursday evening at the parish hall when the following programme was delightfully given:-


Piano solo, Allegretto                      Muller

Recitation, "What the Fiddle Told":

Recitation, "Cuddle Doon": Miss Nettie Fane.

Songs, (a) "Down in the Forest"
           (b) "June": Miss Miller.
Cantata, "The Hours"                     Roeckel
The chair was ably filled by Canon D'Easum. Besides the other splendid numbers on this programme special mention is due the musical cantata conducted by Madame Ellis-Browne and Miss Jardine, both of whom merit the heartiest congratulations for the brilliant success this number attained. Mrs. Costigan and Miss Philips graciously assisted by acting as accompanists in their usual competent manner.


On Friday afternoon at the college building the exercises were continued, when the "little tots" contributed largely to the programme. The ease and grace and utter lack of self-consciousness, that these children displayed was perfectly marvellous. The numbers given were:


Trio, "Flower Dance"                       Edward Hobst
     Gladys Mapson, Nancy Dod, Ethel Bennett.
Part song, "A Terrible Tale":  Primary class.
Rose dance:  Kindergarten class.
Piano duet, "Festival Day":  Ethel Bennett and Nancy Dod.
Haymaker's song:  Primary class.
Piano duet, "Flying Doves":  C. Hale and G. Mapson.
Country dance:  Kindergarten class.
Fan chorus:  Primary class.
Club swinging: Beryl Child and May Richards.
Recitation, "The Minuet": Helen Smith.
Wand drill: Primary class.
The prizes were distributed and the music diplomas, after which addresses were given by the chairman, Canon D'Easum and Mr. Hogg.

The Prize List.

The prize list for the year's work is:


Music certificates, awarded on results of the examination held by associated board of the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music, London, Eng, in conjunction with McGill university.


Primary theory-- Clorinda Hall, Dorothy Smith, Muriel Lindsay, Netta Fane.


Rudiments of music-- Vera Ings, Wilhemina Boles.


Elementary division-- Marion Sanson, Gladys Mapson, Clorinda Hall.


Lower division-- Dorothy Smith, Hazel Auld, Ethel Bennett, Naomi Tidball, Honor Simper.


Higher division-- Barbara Hogg.


Local centre exam.-- Wilhemina Boles, Vera Ings.
Special prize awarded by Mr. Wrigley for highest percentage in theory-- Netta Fane.


Special prize for theory, presented by Miss Philips-- Naomi Tidball, Honor Simper.
The singing class passed their examination successfully and received a very favorable report from the examiner, who referred in most complimentary terms to the excellent training they had received from their extremely capable teacher Mrs. Ellis-Browne.


In the regular school, work prizes are as follows:
General proficiency, prizes presented by Dean Paget-- Kindergarten, Douglas Lougheed; primary, Leslie Warnock, Marjorie Ings, Mary Smith; junior, Sara Hall and Hazel Lindsay; senior, Jessie McLeod.


English literature and composition, presented by Miss Harrison of Victoria-- 1, Clorinda Hall; 2, Sara Hall.


History-- Violet Scott.


French prizes, presented by Miss Burt-- Primary, Lucy Hone and Helen Smith; junior, Marion Corsan; senior, Rosamond Dod and Honor Simper.
Painting and drawing-- Violet Scott, Mary Smith.


General improvement and faithful work-- Muriel Lindsay, Monica Child, Winnifred Thomas.


Scripture-- Prayer book, presented by Canon D'Easum-- Naomi Tidball, Honor Simper. Bible history (jun.), presented by Rev. T. Ryall-- Gladys Mapson and Beyrl Child. Bible history (sen.), gold cross presented by the bishop-- Jessie McLeod.
A special prize is offered for next year for physical culture, and a gold medal to the pupil who exercises the best influence throughout the school.
