SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS AT ALBERTA BUSINESS COLLEGE
Medals and Diplomas Awarded Last Night at the Convocation Exercises -- Alfred
Higgins, Bankhead, and Ray H. Slaughter, Lacombe, Win the Lieutenant-Governor's
Scholarships.
The most successful year in connection with Alberta Business college was
brought to a close last night by the presentation of the diplomas won. Beside
the fortunate winners, there were preset many friends and fellow students to
join in congratulations and applause.
The regular diploma in shorthand requires a net speed of 100 words per minute
in both business letters and general dictation, a net speed of 40 words a
minute on the typewriter from copy, with a satisfactory standing in English,
spelling and composition. The grade 'A' diploma is given for 125 words per
minute in shorthand and 50 words per minute on the typewriter.
The winner of the gold medal in accountancy is decided by the examiners of the
Manitoba Association of Chartered Accountants, for the highest standing in the
intermediate examination; while the gold medal in penmanship is awarded by
decision of the judges associated with the Business Journal of New York city.
Short addresses were delivered by the chairman, Dr. Riddell; by P. E. Butchart,
secretary of the board; and by members of the faculty and donors of prizes. The
students supplied the college yell as a fitting finale, and dispersed with many
congratulations to the winners and much admiration of the artistic diplomas and
handsome medals.

Edmonton; Miss Violet B. Urquhart, Edmonton; Alfred Higgins, Bankhead; Miss
Charlotte Hebden, Edmonton; Miss Blanch L. Patriquin, Bankhead; Miss Rowena D.
Fraser, Edmonton; Miss Queenie Lucas, Wetaskiwin; Clifford Mitchell, Edmonton;
Miss Eva Edwards, Edmonton; Miss Katie McDermid, Edmonton; Miss Hazel Aikens,
Millet; Miss Winnie Daly, Edmonton; Miss Rena Archbold, Miss Olive May Slack,
Edmonton.

The following were awarded the certificate of the Business Journal of New York
for excellence in writing:

Hunter, Miss Annie Lyons, Edmonton; Miss Polly McDonald, Ohaton; Miss Louise
Harvey, Edmonton; T. B. Prince, Battleford, Sask.; Miss Amanda Sorgen, Holden;
A. James Logan, Tofield; Archie A. Crow, Lacombe.
A number of examinations in penmanship have been forwarded to New York, the
results of which have not been received, but will be announced later.
A special certificate for the greatest improvement in penmanship was awarded by
the Business Journal to Miss Ruth Berge, Wetaskiwin.
Medals and Scholarships.
The scholarships and medals were awarded as follows:
Scholarship, $50.00, donated by His Honor, Lieutenant Governor Bulyea, to
students completing the "double course"-- Awarded Alfred Higgins,
Bankhead, $30; Ray H. Slaughter, Lacombe $20.
Scholarship, $25.00, donated by A. C. Rutherford, Strathcona, to students in
the shorthand department -- Awarded Miss Blanche Patriquin, Bankhead.
Gold medal, donated by David Elston for penmanship, to be awarded on decision
of Business Journal of New York.
Gold medal, donated by C. E. Race, for accountancy-- Awarded H. O. Patriquin,
Bankhead.
Gold medal, donated by Edgar Richardson, for shorthand-- awarded Miss Nellie
Wilson, Edmonton.
Gold medal, donated by E. S. Eaton for bookkeeping-- Awarded A. James Logan,
Tofield.
Gold medal ,donated by Remington Typewriter Co., for best record in typewriting
on Remington machine-- Awarded Miss Queenie Lucas, Wetaskiwin.
Silver cup, donated by Underwood Typewriter Co., per Mr. J. G. Pearson,
Edmonton representative, for best record in typewriting on an Underwood
machine-- Awarded Alfred Higgins, Bankhead.
Prize $10.00, donated by the Edmonton Book & Stationery Co., for best
record in composition-- Awarded Miss Marion F. Lavelle, Strathcona.
Scholarship, $50.00 and Scholarship, $30.00, donated by Alberta Business
College. Open for competition in forms 5 and 6 of the public schools of
Alberta, for greatest improvement in penmanship-- To be awarded on completion
of the competition.
