LEAGUE WILL ASK FOR TOTAL PROHIBITION
Resolutions Which Were Presented to the Temperance and Moral Reform Convention
With That Object in View-- More Than One Hundred Delegates Are in Attendance.
That the Temperance and Moral Reform League of Alberta will ask
radical measures in connection with temperance legislation in the province at
the coming session was apparent from the attitude taken at the annual
convention which opened this morning in the First Baptist church with
President W. G. Hunt, of Calgary, in the chair. There were present over a
hundred delegates representing every part of the province and the feeling was
unanimous in favor of a great curtailment, if not the entire elimination
of the liquor trade in Alberta.
No definite action in this regard was taken at the morning session but the
resolutions submitted to the convention and handed over to the various
committees for their report, left no doubt as to the attitude of the delegates.
Provincial Plebiscite.
One resolution called upon the provincial government to take a plebiscite
throughout the entire province next summer on the question of total prohibition
and if such were approved of to act at once upon the will of the people.
Another had in view the asking of the government for a local option law
to cover the entire province and which could be brought in by a majority
vote; the restriction of the importation of liquor into local option districts,
heavier penalties for violation, prohibiting the sale of liquor on Good Friday,
Christmas day and Thanksgiving; and the separating of the bars from the hotels
of the province.
A large number of less important resolutions were also presented. The entire
lot will be considered by the committees and recommendations as to those which
should be accepted will be made to the convention.
Little Business This Morning.
There was little business this fore noon in addition to the adoption of
committees and the presenting of resolutions. A nominating committee was
chosen, composed of Dr. McQueen, Rev. T. G. Buchanan, Mrs. McKinney, Mrs.
Craig, M. Evans, Rev. G. R. Laing and J. D. Blayney, and they afterwards
submitted their report recommending large committees to deal with the different
questions arising throughout the convention.
At twelve o'clock the convention adjourned and the delegates resolved
themselves in committees as outlined by the nominating committee.
