Military Ball

Calgary Herald

N48p0136

10 Jan 1914

Quite unprecedented in solute of beauty and salary was the hall in Al Almar temple that night by the 102 Regiment Calgary Rifles. Never did the ballroom look more beautiful then on the arrangements for the whole event being a mallet of congrainstion for the committee in charge. Union Jacks were draped on the walls and the redavors lit wariet? With the letters of the alphabet. A to D representing the different companies. Rifles hung along the edge of the balcony railing which was draped with hunting whit the orchestra stage called for special praise being done with the trophies won by the regiment arranged in a an embankment of potted plants. Hanging is the regimental colors red and green, hung from the ceiling forming a canopy under the colored lights.

Sharp at nine o’clock the 102-regiment band played. “The Maple Leaf” as the flags were dropped. The dancing then started and continued till about three a.m., when the last of about four hundred guests took their departure.

The regimental colors characterized the decorative scheme in the banquet room where a full course supper was served about midnight. Ropes of autumn foliage hung from the ceiling and the menu was served at small tables centered with curt ions and green foliage, together with streamers of red and green ribbon drawn across the white table covers.  The color theme was clearly carried out in detail and ran through the dainty viands even the menu cards being finished in three colors. The guests came down to supper two sections and half the orchestra with each section. With this arrangement extras were enjoyed in the ballroom, while the other portion of the orchestra played for those on the supper room.

The officers of the regiment welcomed the guests, and proved to be very excellent hosts throughout the evening.
