NURSES GRADUATE
Eleven nurses from the training school of the Calgary General hospital were
presented with their diplomas last evening before an assemblage which well
filled Paget hall, the occasion being the nurses annual graduating exercises.
Mayor Costello occupied the chair and seated on the platform were the members
of the hospital board and the hospital superintendent, Miss Smith.
The nurses in their trim uniforms, each wearing bouquets of roses, were seated
in the main part of the hall, and during the evening many complimentary remarks
were made to the class by speakers. Brief speeches were made by the mayor,
Superintendent McKillop, and Dr. R. B. Bean, who spoke on behalf of the medical
profession. The address by the vice-chairman of the board, Mr. J. H. Woods, was
full of inspiration and encouragement to those who had entered the noble
calling. "Life for we who have traversed it is not all high spots, the
average daily life is full of arduous effort, and ofttimes dreary
routine. The nurse perhaps has more than her share of the dull
routine." He expressed best wishes for their success, not only for their
material progress, but that through their kindness and sympathy, even after
they ceased to be, it would find an echo. A tribute was paid to the Red Cross
nurses, and although all could not go to the battlefields of Europe to minister
to the sick and wounded, each in her place could do her part."
Dr. Deane conducted the taking of the Florence Nightingale pledge after which
the diplomas were presented to the graduates who were: Miss Annie Coury,
Glenbow, Alberta; Miss Fannie Hunt, Greenfield, Nova Scotia; Miss Margaret C.
McLeod, Priceville, Ontario; Miss Ethel S. Thompson, Elmsvale, N.S.; Miss
Hester E. Skuce, Clive, Alberta; Miss Emma M. Miller, Granum, Alberta; Miss
Mary T. Watt, Mount Hope, Alberta; Miss Emma M. Lindsay, Vulcan, Alberta; Miss
Helen F. Mutch, Ernscliffe, Prince Edward Island; Miss Frances Batey, Guelph,
and Miss Ethel Graham, Calgary.
A very enjoyable musical programme given under the direction of Mrs. Glen
Broder added to the plea-
of thanks. Vocal numbers were given by Horace Reynolds and Mrs. Florence Blake
Mahony and Miss Tyr entertained the gathering by reciting "The
Telegram." The violin solo "Adoration" by Miss Maye Rank was exceedingly
well done. At the close of the programme all adjourned to the lower Paget hall,
where refreshments were served and a pleasant social hour spent.
