EDMONTON BORN AND ALBERTA BORN RECRUITS ENLIST IN FIFTY-FIRST BATTALION HERE

Most of Those Joining Are English Scotch and Irish, But Number of Canadian Born is Increasing-- "We Are Getting a Regiment of Which Any Commander Might Well be Proud," Says Lieut.-Col. Harwood.

Four more Edmonton-born men, and several Alberta-born men have answered the call of duty and have enlisted with the 51st battalion, under Col. Harwood. There are the two McLachlin boys-- H. D., aged eighteen, and H. F., aged nineteen, sons of Mrs. McLachlin, 1137 27th street, both of whom were born in Edmonton when it was comparatively an outpost of civilization. Other Edmonton-born men are E. Mottershead, aged 21, son of A. Mottershead, Mount Royal, Edmonton, and J. A. Larose, also aged 21, son of Joseph Larose, Edmonton.
Others who have enlisted are F. Duggin, aged 19, son of Mrs. F. Duggin, 10914 82nd avenue, Edmonton, who was born in Calgary; Chas. Wingfield, aged 22, son of Mrs. H. S. Wingfield, 1022 10th street, Edmonton, who was born in Medicine Hat; and C. Bevington, who was born in Bruderheim.

Many Canadian-born Join.

As was the case with the previous contingents, by far the larger proportion of the men in the 51st battalion are either English, Scotch, or Irish, but it is gratifying to be able to record that during the past few days more Canadian-born than heretofore have joined the colors. Drills are being proceeded with steadily each day, the consequence being that the men are rapidly becoming proficient. Many of the recruits of old country birth have had previous military experience, and all the men have a fine physical appearance, as might be expected in view of the rigorous medical examination. Col. Harwood, in fact, is more than pleased with the men he is collecting around him. "We may appear to be going a little slow," he said, "but at any rate we are getting a regiment of which any commander might well be proud."
What is the nucleus of a bugle band has been started within the past few days, the bugles of the 101st regiment being used. It is hoped to enlarge the band at an early opportunity.

Latest to Join.

Up to last night the names of 367 men had been placed on the rolls, 46 being accepted yesterday. In addition to the previous lists published in the Bulletin the following have joined the regiment: W. H. Ashbury, C. A. Disturnal, C. W. Leifer, T. Seaton, J. Perry, T. H. Triscott, C. P. Maxey, J. R. Mildon, H. Sacey, J. Reid, W. H. Brown, C. Bevington, W. F. Wraight, C. R. Howard, Wm. Cullen, J. E. EDMONTON SOLDIER WITH THE PATRICIAS WRITES FROM FRANCE

By Bulletin Leased Wire.
OTTAWA, Jan. 11-- Mrs. (Dr.)  Robert Law has received a post card from her brother, W. Burns, who is with the Patricia regiment. It was posted from the army base post office in France, dated December 22nd. It states that the regiment has arrived safely in France. It was stationed at the army base, but he did not expect they would remain there long. Mr. Burns was formerly, of this city, but lived in Edmonton when he enlisted.
