ENLISTMENT FOR CITY BATTALIONS REACHED TOTAL OF 687 YESTERDAY

Influx From Country Districts Has Not Yet Begun-- Many Are Expected in Course of Few Days From Outside Points-- No Work Yet Done at Exhibition Grounds

49th Battalion                   440
51st  Battalion                  247

Up to last night the above was the record of enlistment in each of the new battalions now being organized in the city. The rush of applicants is now not so great as at the beginning of the week. There is no line-up as was the case during the recruiting for the first contingent. But the officers in command are convinced that the required number will be obtained.
For one thing, the influx from the country district has not yet started. "I received your letter, and am coming right away" was the way one man living in the north wrote to his brother, who has enlisted in Edmonton this week. This is not an isolated case, for a number of similar letters have been received by each battalion, indicating that those in the rural part of the Edmonton district are not less loyal than the city-dwellers.
Loyalty, in fact, is a word that seems entirely inadequate to describe the spirit that prevails in Edmonton just now. Take a case in point. A man forty-four years of age, who has a record of eighteen and a half years' service in the British regular army, has a son who this week enlisted in the 51st battalion. The son's example awakened the smouldering fires of ardor in the father's breast, and although he is very close to the age limit, he has decided to offer his services once more to King and country. He will appear before the doctor this morning at the 101st armory. Other inspiring examples could be noted.

Physical Standard Excellent.

Col. Harwood, talking to the Bulletin last night, said he was delighted with the physical standards of the men who had so far offered themselves. "My ambition," he said, "is to take from Edmonton one of the best Canadian regiments." He pointed out that very careful selection had been made from the applicants, and that as a result there would be far less weeding-out in this than in the first contingent.
Col. Harwood would like to have a bugle, fife and drum corps for his regiment. He said the cost of a brass band was too prohibitive, but bugles, fifes and drums could be secured at an expenditure of about two or three hundred dollars. Perhaps some patriotic citizen who has the money to spare will gratify the colonel's ambition.

Recruiting at 49th.

Recruiting has proceeded at a little faster pace in connection with the 49th battalion, commanded by Col. Griesbach, but the same splendid physical standards are being maintained, as may be seen by a glance at the accepted men as they parade each morning and afternoon.
There is still no sign of activity at the exhibition grounds, nor has the militia department announced when it intends to authorize the needed alterations. In the meantime the recruits are being quartered in various sections of the city. An allowance of 75c per head is made for subsistence.
Following is a complete list of those already recruited for the 51st Battalion under comand of Lieut.-Col. Harwood:
