FIFTY MORE MEN JOIN BATTALIONS
Total Now is 734-- Pipers Are Wanted for Highland Company of the 49th.
An average of from 100 to 150 men a day appears now to have been reached in the
recruiting for the two new battalions that started last Monday morning.
Yesterday a.m. 23 men joined the 49th battalion and 22 men were accepted by the
51st battalion. The total number for all companies now is 734.
The opportunity to serve the King, the empire and the flag is just as great and
the necessity is greater than in the early stages of the war. Officers of the
two new battalions expect the steady stream of men to flow toward the
recruiting offices during the next ten days, or until the full strength of each
battalion is made up.
Lieut.-Col. Griesbach has forwarded the following letter to Henry Wilson,
secretary of the Scottish regimental committee:
"Sir, I have your letter of the fourth inst. requesting that the command
of the Scottish company be given to Captain R. G. Hardisty. I am pleased to be
able to say that your wishes have been carried out in this matter and I should
be greatly obliged if you will convey to the members of your committee my
thanks for the services which they have rendered this battalion in the
organization of a Scottish company."
It is the expectation of the Scottish committee that following the war the
members of the Scotch company of the 49th on their return will form the nucleus
of a Highland regiment, which it is intended to organize then.
A number of pipers are wanted for the company.
