20 MORE VARSITY STUDENTS ARE TO LEAVE FOR FRONT
Enlistment For Fourth Universities" Company Reinforcing Princess
Patricias.
Some twenty men from the University of Alberta are enlisting with the Fourth
Universities' Company now forming at Montreal, making altogether 150 men or
about one-third of the student body of the University. So far, seventeen men
have passed their examinations and are definitely included in the fourth
contingent, and others are about to conclude their examinations. Transportation
is now on the way, and the men expect to leave at any moment. The men so far
accepted are as follows: James C. Jaffray, R. A. Walton, John C. Anglin,
Charles E. Garlepy, L. S. MacDonald, Fraser M. Gerrie, Geo. D. Roberts,
Arthur W. Deitz, James D. Collins, John A. Collins, William
A. Bassett, Chalmers MacKinnon, Russell J. Lynn, John P. Grant, C. G. Butchart,
G. M. Lavell.
Ninety students from the senior years and six members of the staff have already
left, in addition to more than 30 of their friends, a large number of whom had
passed their matriculation examinations and have been at the University this
year. Several students who were planning to take the new course in agriculture
have enlisted. This is likely to effect seriously the attendance for the year,
but in this respect Alberta is simply having the same experience as other
universities in the Empire. At older universities in England, some of the
colleges are closed entirely, while at others the attendance is very small.
Some of the Canadian universities expect their enrollment to be cut practically
in half. Whatever may be said of the other sections of the communities it
cannot be denied that the universities of the Empire have realized their
responsibility in connection with the national crisis.
