First Ladies Night at Edmonton Rotary Club

The first “Ladies Night” of the Edmonton Rotary club which was held last night at the MacDonald hotel was a pronounced success. It took the form of a dinner, followed by a regular business meeting and a varied program of speeches and music. The banquet hall which was the scene of the function, was filled over fifty members with their wives being present. Sparkling wit and good fellowship characterized the occasion, which will be historic in the annals of Rotary in Edmonton.

The chairman for the evening was J.A. Brookbank and following the dinner he called on each member of the club to introduce to the ladies a fellow member with an original poem on that member. This constituted  one of the most enjoyable features of the program, prizes being awarded to the three best contributors in the persons of Charles Hepburn, A.T. Cushing and Prof. Alexander, the presentations being made by J.E. Brown.

The address of the evening was given by Rev. Dr. McQueen, whoses subject was “Pioneer Days in Edmonton” and who was very happy in his reminiscences of the conditions and characters in the early history of the city. Dr. McQueen paid a tribute to the founder of the Bulletin, and stated that perhaps few of the newer residents of Edmonton fully appreciated the great service which Mr. Oliver had rendered to the city in furthering its interests and making it known and favorably regarded in the outside world. The speaker decribed very Fumorously the advent of the first bicycle to Edmonton, the coming of the railway, the first attempt at church union when the Methodists and Presbyterians held a union thanksgiving service and when the solemnity of the occasion was destroyed by the Methodist parson’s dog insisting on standing on his hind legs on the platform during each hymn. He remarked that if the present attempts at union of these two bodies were not any more successful than on that occasion it was not a very happy outlook.

During the evening a male quartette, Messrs. Eaten, Smith, Duggan and Jones, rendered enjoyable selections and a duet by Messrs. Eaton and Jones was likewise appreciated.

Occasion was taken on the fact that yesterday was the birthday of the president of the club, A.W. Challand, to extend the felicitations and best wishes of the members and to wish him may happy returns.

Great credit for the success of the evening is due to L.G. McHaffie and C.W. McKelvie, chairman and vice chairman respectively of the entertainment committee of the club.
