ENLISTMENTS OF STAFF REQUIRES FACULTY CHANGES
Board of University Governors Completes Plans For
Session Beginning Sept. 25th
A meeting of the board of governors was held Saturday morning, Sept. 9th, in
the University Building, when the plans for the session beginning Sept. 25th
were considered and completed.
A large number of the staff having enlisted in the various battalions, the
chief work of the board was to make such adjustments as were necessary to carry
the university through the year.
The work heretofore undertaken by Dr. Moshier, who is in France as senior
major of the 11th Field Ambulance, will be undertaken for the current year by
Dr. Collip, who is lecturer in the medical department.
Dr. Philo Hammond, of Leland Standford University, was appointed for one year
to take charge of the work of the physics department heretofore under the
direction of Dr. Boyle. Dr. Boyle is in England carrying on research work under
the British admiralty. Mr. Smith, who was lecturer in that department last
year, is also in the naval service.
The position heretofore occupied by C. A. Robb in the engineering department
will not be filled for the year, the work being divided between Professor
Edwards and Mr. Cameron. Mr. Robb is at present working under the munitions
board in Ottawa, where he has charge of the gauge records department.
Wm. Berry, a graduate of the university, was appointed to assist in the
philosophy department, taking a part of the work done heretofore by Dr.
MacEachran, who is paymaster of the 196th Battalion.
Dr. J. F. Coar was appointed to the modern language department as professor of
German, taking the place vacated last year by Prof. Fairley and temporarily
filled during last winter by Dr. Wooley, who retired.
Thos. Marsden, M.A. (Cambridge), was appointed instructor in history. H. H.
Gaetz was appointed to take charge of the department of pharmacy.
The president reported that Messrs. Woodhead and Morrison had each asked for a
year's leave of absence, and this had been granted dating from July 1st.
It was decided that the annual meeting of the board for the purpose of making
estimates should take place on the 30th day of January each year, other
meetings to be called as required.
The question of granting the use of one of the university buildings for a
hospital for returned soldiers was discussed, and the matter was left in the
hands of the president and the chairman of the board to make such arrangements
as they saw fit.
