MILITARY TANK BATTALION
Edmonton Bulletin
30 April 1918
n0vp0358
Member of Tanks battalion Pte. Will Sykes, Is Alberta College Gold Medal Winner
Students Congratulated on their work and on fact that many have joined the colors by Lieutenant-Governor Brett at Closing Exercises.
The outstanding feature of the closing exercises held last night in the Arts Building, of the University, was the number of speeches which dwelt with the many pupils and students of the college who were wearing the king’s uniform and were fighting on the great battlefield of Flanders. His Honor Lieutenant Governor Brett was present and Judge Hon. H.C. Taylor, M.A., was in the chair. The meeting was opened by Rev. A. L. Tuttle, M.A., with devotional exercises.
His Honor Lieutenant Governor Brett congratulated the students on the standard of the college, as well as on the fact that so many of their comrades were doing their duties overseas. His honor then presented the gold medal won by Pte. Will Sykes, the other scholarships and diplomas being presented by the chairman, the acting dean giving the list of awards and announcing the graduation of two of the students who would receive at Convocation, the degree of Bachelor of Divinity. These are Samuel Ratcliffe, B.A., and Alfred Rehwinikel, B.A. whilst three more – John Wesley Nightingale, William Frederick Smith and Pte. William Sykes B.A.- received the diploma of Theology.

Roll of Honor Read
The war having taken from the ranks of Alberta College Students a large number of members, great stress was laid on the latest news of those boys who are now fighting overseas, as well as on the few who have returned, while the names of those who fell at their post of honor were read, amid the silence of a deeply-moved audience. The two students who have returned from the front are Giles H. Clark and Pte. Sidney Bainbridge. Another student, Corp. now Sergeant Joseph William Bainbridge, won the Military Medal for bravery at Passchendale. Those killed in action are:

Passing the Stick
The interesting little ceremony of “passing the stick” was then gone through by J.W. Nightingale, the retiring president of the student’s council, who passed the stick on to Mr. Londsdale the new president for 1918-1919, the “stick” representing a mark of distinction passed on year by year to the best student, the one who has shown himself the best leader of his fellow students, the name of each recipient being engraved on the silver plate which adorns this college sign of authority and leadership. Speeches were made by both Mr. Nightingale and Mr. Londsdale, also Mr. William Freerick Smith, on the traditions of the college, a presentation of a framed group of this year’s graduates being made to Dr. Thomas.
Rev. J.H Johnston, representing the Alberta Conference, spoke on behalf of Rev. Haggith, the president, who was unable to be present, and addressed himself especially to the students who had graduated in the ministry and who were now on the threshold of their most important work of carrying the gospel and influencing for good all those who came close to them. He emphasized the real need of leaders, of preachers who could point to the way of salvation, of men who had a message and who could deliver it, and of men who lived up to their teaching, who served and suffered, sacrificed and prayed.
This was followed by an address of welcome to the graduates of the year to the University by Dr. Lehman, representing the senate of the University.
Repots on Year’s Work
Rev. D.E. Thomas, PhD. The new “head” of the Alberta College, gave a very interesting report of the year’s work – 170 students registering: 24 of these were theological students, while most of the others were studying for their matrculation, several students, however specializing in music studies.
A financial report was also give by Dr. Thomas which [showed] a very satisfactory state of affairs of the college was concerned.
Pte. Bainbridge made a touching little speech on behalf of the boys in khaki, the honor roll of the college showing now nearly a hundred names.
Rev. Professor J.M. Miller, principal of Robertson College, also spoke to the students and was succeeded by Rev. F.S. McCall, BA. Of Alberta College North, who made the speech of the evening conveying the greetings and congratulations of Alberta College North to Alberta College South, and very feelingly spoke of the duties which had to be shouldered by the men who were left behind and who could not fight on the fields of Flanders, but who could work and sacrifice right here and spread a feeling of good fellowship unprejudiced by creeds and differences.
The evening closed with a short address by Dr. Thomas, which was followed by a social reception in the Pembina Hall.
