N. R. Honors Returned Men at Banquet Friday
Hold Banquet and Dance at
Palliser Hotel Friday
A very inetresting and pleasing function took place at the Palliser hotel
Friday evening when the officers and staff of the Department of Natural
Resources entertained to a banquet and dance those members who have returned
from overseas service. The guests of honor numbered in the neighborhood of 30,
but there were a number who were unable to be present. Those honored guests
were: E. S. Doughty, J. Miller, W. P. Clandillon, R. W. B. Reid, G. E. Burrell,
T. Scotland, J. Steedman, C. G. McMichael, R. Johnson, C. T. Ross, F. A.
McLean, S. E. Shaver, J. Anderson, D. P. Maturin, T. Reid, J. Cowderey, W. G.
Bond, J. C. M. Bilton, R. Casson, H. P. Smith, J. Duff, R. Macfarlane, R. W.
Payne, S. W. Green, R. W. Macfarlane, A. L. Sweeney, P. Golightly, F. A. Moore,
H. C. Hilts, W. Rockley, A. McCaskie.
The arrangements were in the hands of a committee, composed of Messrs. O.
Kirkwold, E. W. Thirlwell, A. Newman, E. Whiteside, P. E. Mileson and J.
Colley, and the success of the function is an admirable tribute to their
untiring efforts. The guests numbered over 250, and included representatives
from Strathmore and Brooks. At the banquet, preceding the dance, Mr. P. L.
Naismith, in a few well chosen remarks, proposed the toast of "Our
Guests." He said that the gathering welcomed them with feelings of pride
and pleasure-- pride, because they had followed their path of duty so closely
and with such success, and with pleasure because they were happy to see them
amongst them once again.
Col. E. S. Doughty, in rising to reply on behalf of the honored guests, was
received with tremendous ovation, which showed clearly the esteem in which he
is held, both by his men and his fellow-workers. "We all feel alike,"
said the speaker, "and we all appreciate the greeting which we have
received. While overseas we have endeavored to do our best, and if our efforts
have brought prestige to the community which we have left, this alone is
reward." The colonel concluded by speaking of the splendid work of the men
over there, and of the terrible wounds which some had received. "Our
work-- those of us who are sound and well." said the speaker, "is to
see that the blind and crippled men are cared for, for the remainder of their
lives."
In the interval between the banquet and dance Col. Doughty gave a very
interesting talk, illustrated with lantern slides, of a few of the activities
of the Canadians on the march into Germany. During the evening vocal selections
were rendered by Messrs. C. A. Lydiatt, Horace Reynolds, Max Bishop, D. W.
Clapperton and G. E. Burrell.
