UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA HAS ANNUAL CONVOCATION

More than 150 Degrees Are Awarded to students – Dr. H.M. Tory Gives his Annual Report – Chancellor Stuart Urges Free Thinking and Speaking.

More the 150 degrees were awarded at the largest Convocation ever held in the province yesterday afternoon at the University of Alberta.  This ceremony, the Fourteenth Annual Convocation of the University, opened at three o’clock with the large hall packed to the doors.

At two-thirty o’clock the academic procession formed while crowds were filling Convocation Hall beyond its normal capacity.

After the singing of “O Canada” the Rev. Dr. Millar delivered the invocation followed by the President’s annual report.  Dr. H.M. Tory, in outlining the work accomplished during the year, said the total registration for the year had been 1341, with 200 of these in the Faculty of Medicine and more than 700 taking the Arts course.

During the last year, said Dr. Tory, the University had received a gift from the Rockefeller Foundation, an “endowment of $509,000., with additional gifts from other sources making a total of $535,000.

The records from the Department of Extension showed that upwards if 30,000 persons in the province had reached by lecturers working under the supervision of the department, while a greater number had been an opportunity to see the moving pictures which were circulated.

Portrait  of Chancellor

Following the presentation of prizes, Dr. Tory, on behalf of the Senate, presented the University with a life-size portrait of Chancellor Stuart, by the eminent Toronto artist F.H. Varley.   The picture was unveiled by Lieutenant-Governor Brett.

Mr. Justice Stuart, Chancellor of the University, delivered a short Convocation address, in which he spoke of the pleasure which work done for the University had always afforded him since he first became connected with it at its inception in 1908.  The province, like the University, was still young, he said and should have a great future in store for it.  As the province grows and develops, he said, so will the University.

“But in that growth, whatsoever things are true must always be the motto of the University authorities and of everyone else connected with it.” Chancellor Stuart said.

He made a plea for the encouragement of free speaking and speaking however unpopular the opinions expressed might sometimes happen to be.

An interesting event took place when Lieutenant-Governor Brett presented Robert Stoner, a third year student, with the medal awarded for bravery by the Humane Society of Canada.  The medal was sent by the society to be given to Mr. Stoner in recognition of his brave deed in saving a woman from drowning at Medicine Hat last summer, and by special arrangement, Convocation was judged to be a fitting time for the public presentation.
