NEWLY
FORMED KIWANIS CLUB LAUNCHED AT MEDICINE HAT
(By Herald Staff Correspondent)
MEDICINE HAT, Feb. 25.-- With thirty-two sponsoring members from Calgary,
twenty-five from Swift Current and six from Moose Jaw, Dr. F. W. Gershaw
received on Tuesday night the charter for the newly-established Kiwanis Club
from the hands of H. A. Howard, past president of the Calgary Kiwanis Club. One
hundred and fifty persons were guests of the Medicine Hat club for the evening,
when a banquet was served in the Hotel Cecil, winding up with a dance.
H. A. Howard, who was introduced by Dr. O. H. Patrick, who headed the Calgary
delegation in his office as president, told the Medicine Hat members they were
entering an affiliation of 1,400 clubs and 100,000 members.
Field of Service
He told of the service they could accomplish over a wide field of activities,
and said he looked forward with every confidence to the success of the club in
every form of endeavor.
Dr. Gershaw, the president of the club, in replying, declared it was the
intention of the Medicine Hat members to make their club in every way worthy of
the traditions of Kiwanis. He realised that the Kiwanis spirit meant more than
a handshake or a clap on the back, and they would use every endeavor to make the
name of the junior club of the province in every way worthy.
Dr. Patrick then presented Dr. Gershaw, on behalf of the Calgary club, with a
handsome gavel, suitably engraved . He asked the president to use it fearlessly
and judiciously.
O. J. Mayhew presented the club with a large Union Jack, and this was followed
by a speech from Ernest T. Critchley, past president of the Calgary club, in
which he pointed out to the members that the flag would ever remind them of the
bond of union between them and their fellow citizens.
He told the members that it was the work of the Kiwani spirit to build; not
only for the club and the ideals it stood for, but also to build for all
Canada.
C. F. Adams Speaks
C. F. Adams, K.C., of Calgary, past president and member of the international
committee, spoke of the aims and ideals of Kiwanis, and said he was sure the
Medicine Hat members were going forward to the same high purposes which should
actuate every Kiwanian.
Sam Moore, of Swift Current, gave the Medicine Hat men a rousing welcome to the
Kiwanis fold. He said the survey had been made of Medicine Hat, and though it
was some little time before they decided to come in, they had at last taken the
step, and he knew they could put across anything which they attempted. They must
remember they were carrying the torch onward from the old pioneers of the
country and he decried any attempt which might be made at separation, referring
to some speeches made of this nature lately by a "strolling politician
from Manitoba."
Welcomes Visitors
Rev. Walter Western, in a witty speech, welcomed the visitors. Dr. C. E. Smyth
also spoke, welcoming the members and speaking of the Kiwanis spirit. At the
close of the evening L. W. Brockington charmed his hearers with one of his
witty speeches, ending with the reading of the famous will by an American
lawyer. He urged his hearers to keep young in spirit, and to preserve their
sense of humor and thus be able to preserve the true spirit of Kiwanis.
During the evening members were entertained by songs from Fred S. Holmes,
George Burrell, Dave Clapperton, members of the Moose Jaw and Swift Current
clubs. During the evening a message was read from Moose Jaw, Port Arthur,
Prince Albert, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Wetaskiwin and Hanna.
During the day the visitors were shown round the industrial section of the
city, visiting the famous greenhouses, the pottery plant and the two flour
mills
