155 VETERANS OF MOUNTED POLICE GUESTS OF CITY
Sixty More Former Members Reach City Since
Sunday For Reunion
Twenty Joined in Years 1873 – 1874
Additional List of Names Together with Date Men
Joined the Force
Since Sunday evening
sixty more veterans of the old R.N.W.M.P. force have registered as guests of
the city during the stampede at the headquarters provided on Eight avenue
east. There are now twenty veterans
here who joined the force in 2873 and 1874, the remainder of the 155 now
present having enlisted and served at various times since then.
One of the oldest
veterans attending the stampede is Constable J. Stuttaford. He came from MacLeod to be present at the
reunion. Although 85 years of age, this
old veteran is still quite active, but when he goes out he is always
accompanied by his grandson. Mr.
Stuttaford visited the exhibition grounds for the first time on Wednesday
evening although he has been in the city since Sunday. He served from 1873 to 1897.
WEST WITH FORCE
Another old veteran
who is attending the reunion is Joseph C. Marlin, who came from Kamloops. He enlisted at Ottawa and came west with the
first force under Col. French and assisted in the building of Fort MacLeod. His detachment was at MacLeod until 1875.
It was in that year that
the government started erection of a telegraph line from Calgary to Edmonton,
but as fast as the poles were put in, Big Bear’s men pulled them out and “F”
troop was sent north to settle the trouble.
We met one of Big Bear’s lieutenants at Red Deer, held a pow wow the
next day and settled the matter.” Said Mr. Marlin.
After three years Mr.
Marlin took his discharge and returned to Ottawa .
Veterans who have
