DIPLOMAS AND DEGREES GIVEN AT CONVOCATION

Eleven Alberta Students Given Hood of Medical Doctor At University

LARGE NUMBER OF DEGREES CONFERRED

Honorary Degree of L.L.D. Is Given Sir Frederick Haultain of Sask.

(Special Dispatch to The Herald)
EDMONTON, May 16.-- One hundred and seventy-six students received either degrees or diplomas at the fifteenth annual convocation of the University of Alberta, held in convocation hall Friday afternoon. Also the honorary degree of LL.D. was conferred upon Sir Frederick Haultain, chief justice of the province of Saskatchewan. Dr. W. A. R. Kerr, dean of the faculty of arts, was also honored when he received from M. Jevrian, acting in behalf of the French government the decoration-- L'Officier d'Instruction Publique. Perhaps the outstanding event of the programme, however, was the conferring of the degree of M.D. which was given by the University of Alberta for the first time this year. Eleven Alberta students received the hood of the medical doctor.
Many Are Canadians
Convocation hall was crowded to the doors when at 3 p.m. the ceremony opened with the academic procession of the graduates. After the invocation, President Tory delivered his annual report. The registration this year, he pointed out, was 1,352, of these students 869 were born in Canada, 272 being natives of Alberta. More than half the registration was in the faculty of arts, the faculty of medicine coming next in size. Chancellor Stuart in his address to the graduating students congratulated them. He also expressed the hope that they realized the educational advantages, the province had given them and that they felt a high sense of public duty, ready to return what they had been given by the province.
Rapid Development
The convocation address was delivered by Sir Frederick William Gordon Haultain, chief justice of the province of Saskatchewan, and one of the west's early pioneers. The speaker in opening outlined the rapid development of education in the west during the last forty years. In 1888, he said, there were but ninety schools in the northwest territory, today the west has ten thousand schools with approximately four hundred and eighty thousand pupils.
The universities of the west have been founded on the principles of centralization, monopoly of degree conferring powers and non-sectarianism. These principles had made for rapid development and any deviation from them would in the speaker's opinion tend to weaken the whole university system.
In closing the speaker advised the graduates to keep in mind the debt they owed to their province, to get interested in some one political problem, and to endeavor to leave behind them the educational inheritance which had been left them by their pioneer forefathers in the west.
