H.M.C.S. “Alberta” is Novel Armistice Ball Decoration

Crossed Spears, Miniature Aeroplane, Bayonets and Flags

Also Feature in Colorful Decorations at Hotel Palliser

Popular Young Debutantes Make Initial Bow to Society

At Outstanding Function.

Boom! Boom!  One could almost imagine the resonant discharge of the big guns on His Majesty’s ship, with the resultant shattering of the marble pillars in the Hotel Palliser – so real the scene was Thursday evening, November 11, at the seventh annual armistice ball, sponsored by the Military Institute.

The west end of the rotunda was entirely transformed into the prow of the warship, with guns in formidable position and a crew of sailors in uniform.  A miniature aeroplane hung from the chandeliers in the dining room directly above the orchestra, flags decked the walls, crossed lances filled the window spaces and bayonets were also used as decoration.

It might have been war time!  A ball celebrating the return of officers home on leave.  Bugle calls, clanking spurs, military salutes, shining buttons, swords and medals, soldiers in red and khaki and sailor boys, in blue, officers and privates, quick commands.  These things were a part of the annual Armistice ball!

Society turned out on mass for this outstanding function of the year and the bright uniforms of the officers gave an éclat that is decidedly lacking in a mere civilian affair.  Graceful forms in chiffon, velvet laces and taffeta, many new gowns for the occasion swirled in merry time to the tune of Holden’s splendid dance music.  It was composed of twelve pieces and many flattering tributes were paid by guests in regard to the entrancing dance music.   Long tables were artistically arranged in the grill room and the east end of the rotunda, where supper was served.

Mrs. D.W.B. Spry and Mrs. D.G.L. Cunnington received the guests in the oval drawing room, the former choosing a smart gown of black georgette over black silk with silver trimming and fashioned with a silver panel down the front.  Her flowers were bronze chrysanthemums..  Mrs. Cunnington wore a handsome model fashioned of flame brocaded velvet.  It was made with a draped overdress held in place with a rhinestone ornament and a georgette pearl.  The skirt was in two points in front and below the hemline.  She carried white chrysanthemums.  Miss Emilie Mason and Miss Muriel Dunlop were charming debutantes.  Miss Mason appeared in white georgette with rhinestones.  It was arranged in the popular tight bodice style with a panelled skirt.  In contrast, the red Spanish shawl worn and a corsage bouquet of red roses were most effective.  Miss Muriel Dunlop wore a chic flock of geranium georgette trimmed with silver beads and carried a geranium, fan from Paris.

Committees in charge of the affair, who are to be congratulated on its unprecedented success were:
