Impressive Ceremonies Attend Award of Prizes and Certifiecates

The graduation of the first class of nurses from the University hospital Friday evening was an impressive occasion, the awarding of prizes and diplomas taking place in Convocation hall, where the nursing school members of the faculty and the graduates were gathered.

In dainty white uniforms, surmounted by black gowns, the members of the graduating class led the academic procession. Rev. J.P. Gerrie gave the invocation.

President Tory’s prize for general proficiency was awarded to Isobel Secord., with Annie Robertson obtaining honorable mention. Dean Kerr’s prize for highest standing in examinations was awarded to Carthena Trowbridge, with Kathryn Mailory honorable mention in the intermediate year. Miss Fenwick led the graduates as they took the Florence Nightingale pledge. Chancellor Mr. Justice N.D. Beck presented the prizes and diplomas to the class.

Expressing his pleasure at being present at the graduating of the first lass of nursing at the university, Dr. H.M. Ory addressed the students. Since the establishment of the university fifteen years ago, there had been many “first occasions”, and this event illustrated the growth of the institution to an exceptional degree. The profession of nursing had been built up by the spirit of love for humanity, the need of helping as in war time and by the knowledge of modern science.

His Honor, Dr. William Egbert, lieutenant governor spoke to the nurses from a medical experience of 35 years asking them to remember that they had been training in one of the best nursing schools in Canada but that they would often be called upon to save lives without the equipment to which they had become accustomed.

The members of convocation left the hall to the strains of the Recessional, played on the organ by T.H. Nichols. Following the graduation and informal reception was held for relatives, and friends of the class. Miss Margaret Gold, Dr. Vango and Mr. Nichols gave a musical program. Those receiving diplomas and prizes were
