Members of the United Empire Loyalists Association met in the Board of Trade rooms on Wednesday evening for the last open meeting of the season. Mr. L.F. Clarry, K.C. occupied the chair and made interesting announcements regarding the plans of the association for the next fall’s activates. The executive hopes to be able to plan a series of gathering for the next season, with eminent speakers to address the members of the club.

Mr. J.T. North spoke on the contribution made to the life of the Deminion by those U.E.L. stock and capeclally stressed the work of that particular section of the Loyalists group which settle in Nova Scotia Some 28,000 immigrants came to this small province and there started the great work which later developed into the English-Canadian literature of the pre-Confederation period. Mr. North stressed the great contributions made by Nova Scotians to the literature and culture of the time and added that the fact that over one thousand of these pioneers were university graduates, had undoubtedly something to do with ths. “The coming of the United Empire Loyalists was one of the greatest single forces in development of which Canada has ever known he concluded.

Master William Epstein spoke on the great future of Canada and emphasized the need of good immigration policy in the years to come, that the standards inaugurated by the Loyalists may not be allowed to disappear. This youthful orator spoke fluently of Canada’s present attitude toward the “stranger within her gates” and gave personal instances to illustrate this points. The Chairman predicts a brilliant future for this young boy.

Mrs. M.L. Bowen read a paper on the equipment provisions and other interesting details relative to the exodus of the United Empire Loyalists from the United States, and spoke of the hardships which these gallant pioneers endured that they might have liberty under the flag they loved.

Dr. George W. Kerby spoke briefly on the traditions which the present generation must cherish, and of the great contributions made to development by the Loyalists ancestors. “Ours is a living past.” Said Dr. Kerby, and the history traditions and romance of this vital period in Canadian history cannot be too well understood and revered by the people of the Dominion. He stated that what is most needed is a re-infusion of the Loyalist spirit in the people today.

Musical items were contributed by Mrs. L.A. Maxwell, Mr. D.M. Stirton and the Paliner hotel trio under the leadership of Mr. Henderson. Accompanists for the evening were Mrs. Hal Morgan and Mrs. Howard Harris.
