Eleventh Armistice Ball at Palliser is Delightful Function
Members of Alberta Military Institute Are Hosts
on Tuesday Evening
Through a replica of the historic Menin Gate, where, twelve
years ago, war-scarred warriors passed and repassed in sadly-depleted columns
from the battlefields of Yypres, a vastly different throng gathered to
celebrate again the declaration of peace, when on Tuesday evening members of
the Alberta Military Institute were hosts to more than 500 of their friends at
their eleventh annual armistice ball.
Great shining candelabra, gleaming swords and lances, flags and colors of the
Empire vied with the scarlet and blue uniforms of the men, and the vivid frocks
of the women in a brilliant galaxy of color.
Past Recalled
In the ballroom, where war-time melodies and modern jazz tunes blended in
inspiring harmony, maids and matrons and doughty warriors whirled to the music
of the dance. In the spacious rotunda, and in the gayly-decorated supper-room,
old soldiers chatted, exchanging war-time reminiscences. And everywhere, but
most of all in the shadow of the old shell-torn gate, members of Calgary's
younger generation whispered among themselves as they strove to imagine
"what it must have been like in those days, when those things really
happened."
Mrs. David Ritchie, wife of the president of the Alberta Military Institute,
and Mrs. D. M. Ormond, wife of the officer commanding Military District 13,
received the guests as they entered the reception room. Mrs. Ritchie's gown was
a becoming model in black lace, fashioned in long, close-fitting lines. She
carried a bouquet of deep red roses. Mrs. Ormond, who also chose black for her
costume, wore a stunning frock of soft chiffon velvet, and also carried red
roses.
His Honor the Lieut.-Governor of Alberta and Mrs. William Egbert were among the
prominent guests who attended the affair.
