R.A.G. Bell was first Subscriber to Herald During July 1883
Calgary Man claim Honor Subscriber before Paper was Printe.
R.A. Kimpton bought third copy, July 31
Man who came here in 1910 has praise for work of pioneers.
Ralph A.G. Bell, 312 Fourth avenue west, claims to have been the first subscriber to the Herald before it had been published in July 1883 when he was a constable in E troop of the North West Mounted Police stationed at the small settlement. He came to Calgary in 1880.
Mr. Bell, with other constables was operating a ferry over the Bow river, where the railway bridge now stands, east of the city in July, 1883, he informed the Herald. T.B. Braden crossed the ferry on his way to the then site of Calgary on the east side of the Elbow river
He informed the constables in charge of the ferry that he and his partner Armour were about to start a paper to be called the Calgary Herald, and solicited subscriptions, according to Mr. Bell. Mr. Bell subscribed, and regrets that he no longer has the receipt given him by Mr. Braden showing that he was the first subscriber to the yet unborn paper.
Fought in Rebellion Under Inspector Steel
Mr. Bell was one of the detachment under Inspector S.B. Steel which in 1884 and 1883 was stationed along the line of construction of the C.P.R. from the summit of the Rockies for 150 miles west. He with the rest of the detachment. Went north with Inspector Steele, who commanded the scouts and police under General Strange, During the 1885 rebellion. Leaving the police at the end of his term of enlistment in 1886, Mr. Bell went into the livery business and later into real estate. He has been a resident of Calgary from those early days until now.
Until Mr. Bell’s claim was received the honor of being first on the Herald’s honor list had been given to Supt. J. McIllree. Mr. Bell states that Mr. Braden had not seen Supt. McIlree up to the time of Mr. Bell’s subscription
R.A. Kimpton, purchaser of the third copy of the Herald, now living at Whie Hourse Lodge Windemere, B.C. writes as follows “I have been in Alberta on and off for 47 years. I bought the third copy of the Herald on August 20, 1883. A tent was put up near the railway for printing “Bunty” Braden was editor and one of the McNeil boys sold the paper.
The town and country around was canvassed for subscribers to the paper on July 31, 1883. I have it in a diary that the first train crossed the Bow river on August 11, 1883. Dr. Brett and Dr. Orton were on it as was also Tom Burns, Shortly after known as old Tom Burns, the auctioneer.
“In 1930 when the old times association was formed I, with Munson, George Lane, Dr. Brett and Tom Burs was a gust of Billy Marshall, who was then president of the Rotarians, and today I am the only one of the five left, the others having all crossed the Great Divide.
Pioneers Praised by Man who came in 1910
Paise for the pioneers who built up this western land is given in the following letter written by James Pettigrew, 1213 Ten-A street northwest.
“I would very much like to have the pleasure of getting one of your honor roll certificates, but I meekly shrink the ordeal of mixing with those splendid pioneers of “85, who followed the western sunsets in a prairie schooner. Standing beside such men and women in this great west, I hardly think I deserve a certificate.
“I LANDED IN Calgary on Easter Sunday, 1910, when 25,000 scattered people comprised Calgary’s population. The Palliser Hotel was then portrayed by a shack on the platform, where a Chinaman stood at the door ringing a bell to call passengers to lunch.
“Our city has seen many wonders since 1910. Men of vision have given us a long glimpse into destiny in their great buildings and great enterprises that but seek to serve further generations of Calgarians. While our Calgary Herald is seeking to honor this 20 year readers, the writer is of the opinion that some outstanding recognition should be the award of the men whose courage and foresight gave to Calgary its finest building the Hudson’s Bay store.”
Nearly 1,000 have applied for certificates.
Nearly 1,000 readers of the Herald have applied for the honor roll certificate, including that they have subscribed to the Herald for 20 years or more. Among their number are many of the prominent old timers. Several weeks ago the Herald published the names of 310 readers who had revealed their eligibility. Since then about 600 names have been received. In the following list 400 of these are published.
