BENNETT AWARDS ARE ANNOUNCED
McKillop Scholarships Also Given Out-- High Marks Obtained
by Winners
Scholarships awarded from funds established by Premier R. B. Bennett,
in 1922, and by the late Archie McKillop about the same time, for public and
high schools in the city, have been announced by the registrar of the
department of education. The results are based on the examinations of June,
1930, and the list was received late Monday by D. C. Bayne, secretary-treasurer
of the Calgary Public School Board.
Each winner of the Bennett awards in grades XI and XII receives $100, and those
in grades VIII, IX and X receive $50. In the senior grades, as in the lower,
the award is decided according to the aggregate marks received on all subjects,
but in addition the pupil must pass the normal or matriculation requirements.
The McKillop scholarships receive $25, and it is confined to Grade XI.
Winners of the Bennett award in grades VIII were: Wallace Grant, Hillhurst, 445
marks; Elizabeth Davidson, Sunalta, 441 marks.
Grade IX winners-- David Arthur McKerricher, Crescent Heights, 637 marks;
Rothnie Montgomerie-Bell, Western Canada, 660 marks.
Grade X winners-- Arthur Henry Spurway, Crescent Heights, 633 marks; Staave
Anna Kruse, Western Canada, 614 marks.
Grade XI winners-- Simon Pasternick, East Calgary, 690 marks; Ethel Gwendoline
Hyde, Central, 628 marks.
Grade XII winners-- George Anthony Ritchie Mason, East Calgary, 735 marks;
Margaret Agnes Smith, Central, 753 marks.
McKillop Awards
In the McKillop scholarships, Nathan Safran, Grade XI, at East Calgary,
obtained the highest marks with 662. Margaret Madeline Maguire, Central High,
with 614 marks, came next, and was followed by Stanley Arthur Franklin,
Crescent Heights, with 583 marks, and Yee Wing, Western Canada, with 561 marks.
