MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE HELD AT CEMETERY
Military, Civilian
Graves Decorated By Canadian Legion
In memory of and out of respect for leaders and comrades of
the Great War, Edmonton Branch No. 1, Canadian Legion, held its annual memorial
service and decoration day ceremony at the Cross of Sacrifice and Soldiers'
Plot, Edmonton Cemetery, on Sunday.
And while the service was mainly in honor of those who served and gave their
lives in the great war, or as a result of services therein, hundreds of
residents took advantage of the opportunity to again pay respects to their
departed who lie in Edmonton Cemetery surrounding the Soldiers' Plot. Military
and civilian graves were decorated and by the end of the afternoon the entire
cemetery presented a beautiful sight-- a bevy of wonderful Alberta blooms,
fresh and fragrant, with perfume carrying for a long distance from the
cemetery.
MAYOR CHAIRMAN
His Worship Mayor D. K. Knott was chairman of the service.
At the foot of the Cross of Sacrifice the Canadian Legion service was held.
Under the direction of Bandmaster L. Jones, the Salvation Army band played
"New Zealand Warriors" march.
Next Mayor Knott made a few remarks, in which he outlined the purpose of the
gathering and the increasing significance of this annual commemoration.
His address was followed by one minute's silence, after which the band played
Handel's "Dead March from Saul."
Capt. Rev. G. G. Reynolds, padre to both the Legion and 49th Battalion
association, pronounced the invocation and the hymn, "O, God Our Help in
Ages Past," was sung.
The "In Memoriam" address was delivered by Capt. J. C. Bowen. He
spoke of the splendid spirit of self-sacrifice that had animated those who had
served with the colors and of their glorious achievements both as soldiers of
Jesus Christ and of the king. They had laid down their lives in a noble cause,
asking and receiving little reward.
It was fitting that such ceremonies of commemoration should be held so that the
names of these gallant men and women would "liveth evermore."
WREATHS LAID
The address was followed by the laying of wreaths on the Cross of Sacrifice.
The hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers," was sung and then there
sounded over the quiet assemblage the paignant notes of the "Last
Post", sounded by Bugler J. Ratcliffe of the Legion. Only a soldier
realizes to the full the portent of "Last Post" and many a grizzled
veteran who had faced the Prussian guard with clear eyes was forced to choke a
lump rising in his throat and brush away a tear that welled up in spite of all.
"God Save the King" brought the formal service to a close.
Then there were seen throughout the cemetery and all afternoon and into the
evening, little family groups and individuals visiting not only the Soldiers'
plot, but private plots, laying wreaths, bouquets and other floral emblems on
graves.
Not a grave in the Soldiers' Plot was left without a floral remembrance and few
in the entire cemetery but carried freshly cut flowers.
LIEUT.-GOVERNOR PRESENT
His Honor Lieut.-Gov. W. L. Walsh was among those in attendance.
At Mount Pleasant Cemetery, on the South Side, where some returned men are
buried, Mrs. L. Hawkins of the War Widows Association and a committee of the
organization placed flowers on graves.
At Edmonton Cemetery laying of wreaths on the Cross of Sacrifice was carried
out by a committee consisting of Mrs. A. L. MacKay, vice-president of the War
Widows Association; Mrs. J. Turner, Overseas Nursing Sisters Association; Fred
Deer, president, Canadian Legion; W. S. Ross, president Amputation Association;
Maj. J. L.B. Claxton, secretary, Army and Navy Veterans Association, members of
the Salvation Army and Legion of Frontiersmen.

placed on graves.
