LAND PATENT KEY
Aliquot Parts: Aliquot parts are a rectangular survey system notation used to describe a section of land. A section is equally divided into halves and quarters. In legal terms, a section is always described in relationship to the four points of the compass. Standard compass abbreviation being N, S, W, E. Such as the N½ of Section 5 or the NW¼ of Section 5.
Section/Block Number (Sec/Blk): A section number identifies a section in a township. A block number identifies a block (or piece) of land within a township.
Township (Twnshp): A "township" is a major subdivision of the public lands under the rectangular system of surveys. A township number identifies the number of tiers a township is located north or south of the baseline. A township direction indicates on which side (north or south) of the baseline the township is located.
Range: A "range" is a row or tier of townships lying east or west of a principal meridian. A range number identifies the number of tiers a range is located east or west of the principal meridian. A range direction indicates on which side (east or west) of the principle meridian the township is located.
Fractional Section (Fract.Sect.): A section of land is denoted as a fractional section if it is not a complete section (e.g., less than 640 acres due to a body of water).
Meridian Name (Meridian): The name of the meridian, extended from an initial point, upon which corners are established for regular townships, sections, quarters, and quarter-sections. Note: "PM" = Principal Meridian.
State (ST): The US state where the land was geographically located.
Counties (Co): The present day name of the county or parish in which the land is located. A single land description may have more than one county or parish.
Survey Number (Svy#): A numeric or numeric-alphabetic number assigned to an area of land as a result of a survey.
