SANKOFA'S SLAVERY DATA COLLECTION
Lee Plantation
Location: on the South River; Anne Arundel Co., MD
History: Stephen L. Lee owned a relatively small amount of property and few slaves. Obsessed with investigating an affair between his wife of 26 years and a young schoolteacher, he paid little attention to managing his slaves. This gave the slaves the opportunity to escape. In 1860, the United Staes census taker recorded six of Lee's 24 slaves as fugitives from the state, ranging in age from 22 to 2 years old.
