History: Ridgeway Plantation was owned by the Carrington family. The Carrington slaves attended nearby Roanoke Presbyterian Church.
Following Emancipation, the ex-slaves adopted surnames other than Carrington, such as Davis and Canada. Mrs. Carrington offered Abel Davis, a former slave who gained a reputation amongst the slaves as a preacher, an acre of land to build a Church. Upon that acre of land the Ridgeway Presbyterian Church was built in 1876.
