| Juanita Cowdery, proprietor of "Juanita's Dolls," Anchorage, Alaska, made the 17-inch Anna Baranof doll for the Alaska NSDAR. Mrs. Cowdery makes porcelain replicas of antique dolls. She hand-poured the head and hands of porcelain and hand-painted the face. Mrs. Cowdery's husband John is currently serving in the Alaska State Legislature from Anchorage. |

Gayle Cederberg, Col. John Mitchell Chapter, was the doll project coordinator. In an Anchorage Times article, February 21, 1987, it was reported that the organization hoped to raise $10,000 from the doll to benefit the NSDAR Helen Pouch Memorial Scholarship fund. The doll was shown at the 96th DAR Continental Congress, Washington, D.C., April 20-24. The doll was also exhibited locally in the Ann Stevens Room, Loussac Library, Anchorage, in February,1987. The steamer trunk in the background is a model of the type of trunk used by passengers of the Alaska Steamship Company on their trip to Alaska in territorial days. Many of the Alaskan DAR members arrived via these ships before air service was established to the north country, when the only way to get to Alaska from "Outside" was by ship. |
