History of the Alaska Society DAR

The first DAR chapter in Alaska was organized in Sitka in 1903, however, it disbanded circa 1909. About 50 years later the Alaska Society NSDAR was organized by Rae Stevens Hoopes. By this time there were three chapters in the state: the Alaska Chapter NSDAR, Fairbanks; Colonel John Mitchell Chapter NSDAR, Anchorage; and Mt. Juneau Chapter NSDAR, Juneau, which disbanded on February 8, 1992. The first state conference was held in Fairbanks, Alaska, on October 24,1958, with State Regent Rae Stevens Hoopes presiding.

Today, Alaska has five chapters: Alaska Chapter NSDAR, organized November 21,1925; Colonel John Mitchell Chapter NSDAR, organized October 25, 1952; Sleeping Lady Chapter NSDAR, Eagle River, organized December 10, 1980; Natalia Shelikof Chapter NSDAR, Kodiak, organized October 7, 1982; and Inside Passage Chapter NSDAR, Juneau, Alaska, organized April 12, 2014. The Alaska Society will celebrate their 60th Annual State Conference in March 2017.
