Juneau

Juneau became Alaska's capitol city in 1906 when the capitol was moved from Sitka. The city was founded in 1880 by Joe Juneau and Richard Harris, after they discovered gold in Gold Creek. This discovery led to the development of the Alaska-Juneau mine which was the largest mine of its type until ceasing production in 1944. Local points of interest include gold mines, museums and the Mendenhall Glacier, also of interest is the State Capitol building, which is trimmed with famed Tokeen marble, quarried in Southeast Alaska.
