COBB, GARNER, GRIFFIN posted by Betsy Tyson on Saturday, May 5, 2001

I am trying to determine where my GGG grandparents, Robert COBB and Jemima GARNER are buried. They can be found on the 1850 Benton County census, living in the 28th District, with their son, my GG grandfather Samuel Parnell COBB and his family, which included his wife, Melissa Margaret GRIFFIN and children Margaret, James, Robert, Clarke, and Elizabeth. Robert COBB died in 1857 in Gadsden and is buried in Hokes Bluff, as is Jemima GRIFFIN COBB. I am also trying to determine where Samuel Parnell COBB and family lived between that 1850 census and their move to Milam County, Texas in the early 1870s. Another researcher found them in Benton Co on the 1855 Alabama census. Samuel Parnell COBB's son Clarke Griffin COBB (b. 1841 Benton Co, AL ) was instrumental in bringing his parents and siblings, including his youngest brother, my G grandfather Jesse COBB (b. 1851), and other Alabama families to Texas after the Civil War. Samuel Parnell COBB's grandchildren said he fought in the Civil War but I have found no confirmation. He would have been in his 50s. I am trying to determine where Samuel Parnell COBB and family lived between 1850 and the move to Texas in the early 1870s. If not in Calhoun County, I believe they were in a neighboring county. I have found Samuel Parnell COBB's brother Pressley Garner COBB in the 1870 Calhoun County Census. In 1860 P.G. COBB and family were on the Cherokee County Census. I also would like to know Gadsden and Hokes Bluff were in Calhoun County in 1860 and 1870. I know those two communities are today in Etowah County but have found no information about earlier county changes. Is there a single source that explains county changes in Alabama such as these ? Thank you.

BORDEN, BRYANT posted by Terry L. Harrison on Wednesday, May 23, 2001

BRYANT/BORDEN I was wondering if someone could search the OLD Records of Estates and Administration for Benton (calhoun) Alabama for the surname BRYANT. My ancestor was Elijah BRYANT, who lived in the Calhoun/Cleburne area between 1849-1880. I am having difficulty in locating his parents names. One other name may be his wife, Martha Jane BORDEN. I know there were a lot of Bordens in this area. I know Borden Springs was named after my 5th Great Grandfather and his brother (Eli and Joel BORDEN). Any info about these surnames will be greatly appreciated.
